  1. I recently attended one of the Notre Dame "Play Like a Champion" courses. Excellent course that I wish was required for all parents and coaches of student athletes and rec leagues. It talks about the imprtance of making sports fun for kids, and getting them to love the game. Also talks alot about player rotation recommendations and player/parent/coach conduct. If any of you are interested, you can read more about the program here: http://www.playlikeachampion.org/ BTW, I really like the PACT, and agree with Rob's suggestions.
  2. I'm gonna guess Angry Birds as the winner with Nacho Cheese taking 2nd place.
  3. Several things I would like to see changed: We play in an nfl flag league here in Texas. Great league, but I miss not being able to pitch the ball (all handoffs have to be direct handoffs). I'd love the opportunity to pitch it on the run or do lateral, hook and ladder plays etc. Just would make the game more fun I thik. One big problem I've seen is coaches cheating. To the point where parents running the chains are intimidated to call a player on their team out of bounds when they clearly were out. Same for TD calls. I think this goeas along with taking the game way too seriously.Lastly, coahes cheating by subbing in players on their teams who are not registered. I have seen this in at least 3 games I've coached. Last winter we played a team during the regular season and beat them 32-7. During the playoof the same team (who had lost all of their games), all of a sudden had a phenomenal player who I found out was not even registered on their team after the game. Unbelievable!!
  4. Having coached quite a few seasons now, I understand the internal struggle a coach can go through when deciding to go all out for wins or coach the right way and teach the kids about sportsmanship and class. From a coaches standpoint, I can tell you that we all want to win all of the games, but my goal above all else, has always been to get the kids to love the game of football. For any age under 7th grade I don't understand not trying to get every kid the ball and let them all learn both offense and defense. Ther's going to be plenty of time in middle school and high school and maybe beyond where the kids can specialize in one particular position, but heck, even in high school most kids play on both sides of the ball!
  5. Sounds like a great game. Your play call had me thinking whether or not it should have been called a safety or not, as I can't remember having that call in any of our games before. But according to the NFL youth flag league rules (which also has a 7 second clock) it is not a safety if QB reaches 7 seconds in the end zone. Here is the rule I found: " The quarterback has a seven-second "pass clock." If a pass is not thrown within the seven seconds, play is dead, the down is consumed and the ball is returned to the line of scrimmage. Once the ball is handed off, the 7-second rule no longer is in effect. a. If the QB is standing in the end zone at the end of the 7-second clock, the ball is returned to the line of scrimmage (LOS)." So even though it was a bummer call, it looks like it was the correct one.
  6. John, I like this play. I love fake outs and trick plays as you know. I think it could work fine as it is, but if you want to make it a bit more tricky, how about this: Line up 2 WR's on either side of the center, with the RB out wide left and one WR out WR right. When the RB comes in motion and grabs the snap, have the QB jump as you mentioned and yell something (like Oh no!) and then he immediately turns around and chases the fake ball. The 3 guys on the line (C and 2 WR's) immediately stand up at the snap and turn around toward the scrambling QB to further sell the fake. I think this could add some cloaking to the RB snap, as well as further confuse the defense.
  7. Wow, I can't believe that. That should never happen on any youth football team.
  8. No they don't have the nice turf fields in spring and fall. Usually we play at the Round Rock HS practice fields. Basically just a large grass field that they section off into 4 regulation flag fields. They're not too bad, unless it rains.. then they turn into a muddy mess.
  9. We really don't do anything different. We let the kids wear gloves if it helps them catch or hold onto the ball better. For some kids this is a "mental" edge, but hey if it makes them believe they catch better I'm all for it. I definitely push all the parents to buy cleats, as the natural grass fields we play on are horribly slippery after a rain. I have used a ball that has better grip in previous seasons than the standard balls used in the leagues. You can find a discussion about that about halfway down in this thread: http://www.y-coach.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=1799&st=15 That's about it.
  10. Yah that is the tough thing about coaching a team of strangers. Sometimes you will come across parents who think their kid should be the star, or you're not playing them enough, etc. It is hard to make everyone happy all the time. Like John, Rob, Orange and others on this board, I try to keep a core group of kids that either live in our neighborhood, or are friends of kids on the team. Just try to spread the ball around the rest of the season and if they want to part ways after that then so be it. I had the exact situation last winter with a kid who would show up late to every practice or not show up at all, and then also showed up 10-15 minutes late for every game. I asked the parents what was going on and they said he was unmotivated to go to practice and games because he felt he never got the ball. I explained that we had made at least 3-4 attempts every game to get him the ball and that sometimes stuff happens that prevents it from happening that are beyond my control as a coach (i.e. he dropped a pass, or the pass was incomplete, etc.).
  11. Well pretty much the same scenario for us this weekend, except our game wasn't even close. We played a super stacked team that creamed us 33-0. They scored on the first play of the game and kept scoring just about every time they touched the ball. Sometimes we held them for a play or 2 before the broke one for a TD. These guys are all big, athletic, and FAST!!! We play in a 5th/6th grade league, and all my kids but 1 are still 5th graders with average athleticism. This whole team was 6th graders. They only 6 kids on their team, and at least 4 out of their 6 were awesome athletes, so they pretty much had all stud players on the filed the whole game. We were simply outmatched, and the other coach just has an amazingly good team. There is no one in our league who will come close to them this season. I saw the same thing in my kids eyes after they scored on the first play. They had their heads down and knew they were going to get smoked. I tried to keep things positive, but it didn't help much. I have already begun putting together a short talk I am going to give them at our next practice about giving their best effort no matter what. Luckily we won't play this team a second time this season, except maybe in the playoffs...(Uh-oh!).
  12. We won 32-0. Like you we will be playing the only undefeated team in our league. I watched them play and they have some older kids who are really disciplined and some smaller kids who are very fast and shifty. It should be exciting!! Good Luck (we'll both need it I think).
  13. Dellobo, I saw your girls running down the field on some long runs again yesterday. Looks like you definitely have things figured out now. Good luck against Hector's team next week.
  14. We played a good team today and ended up losing 15-7. We had the game tied 7-7 up until 3 minutes left in the game, and then the other team scored on a long run where we missed som flags. They scored the 2 pt conversion to beat us by 8. I did watch a little of your game dellobo. The girls looked very good today. Those sweeps were money every time it seemed.
  15. Yup. Never played against Hector but I know he took a team to the national championships a couple years ago so I am sure he is a good coach. Sure that sounds good. I forgot to say we're on field 3 at Vista Ridge at 4PM.
  16. Currently coaching winter 5th/6th grade NFL Flag Football

  17. Hey Dellobo, We play in the same league as you in the 5th/6th grade division and started our season this past weekend as well. We won 35-7, and all kids got at least 2 ball touches. Most had 3 or more and 7 of my 8 kids on the team scored either a TD or extra point. I have a couple of new kids on our team this winter (friends of players on our team), and one is a girl who is playing QB for me this winter. She is doing great and really picking up the offense fast. As I tell my team during practices and re-emphasized before the first game, it is the little details that make the difference. Selling the fakes hard on run fakes, etc. We play at 4PM Sunday if you want to take a look. I'd be glad to help you out anyway I can. Patrick
  18. I really like that double reverse pass!! Good execution on all of the plays. The kids look sharp.
  19. Looking forward to some Thanksgiving dinner and a healthy dose of Thanksgiving Football!!
  20. So I'm still not sold. Here is my logic. You have a 7 second clock for the QB to throw, and if he hands off to a RB who might throw there is no clock. With a rusher you have on average 3 seconds to get rid of the ball, and more than likely will either force a shorter throw or a bad throw that has a higher probability of not being caught or intercepted. If you choose not to rush, then your CB's have to cover the whole field which spreads them out farther and you have to cover for a longer amount of time (7 seconds or more depending). If you are running a zone I would think this amount of time for the QB to throw would get you picked apart. M2M relies too much on individual athleticism, so I would think it would be fairly easy to create mismatches in the offenses favor and again you would be at a disadvantage by not rushing.
  21. Hi Lew, I am surprised that rushing less on a pass heavy team yielded better results. Can you give more details?
  22. What John suggested is pretty much exactly the way we would run plays in a series, and it has worked gangbusters for us. Make sure you practice the handoffs over and over in practice to ensure they do it right in the game. Start slowly and walk (literally walk) through the play in practice and make sure every kid knows what their job is and that they are doing it correctly. Emphasize the fakes , actually overemphasize them. Alot of the success of the misdirection plays comes from the "acting" of the kids. They have to really sell the play. Good luck
  23. Getting ready for Winter 5 on 5 NFL Flag Football!!!

  24. The way you have it drawn up I can see why it wouldn't work. The idea is that the handoff has to be super quick amd the center immediately has to take off. Having the center run around the qb gives the defense way too much tome to react and they will shut it down.
  25. John I agree with you. I didn't think it was legal because the ball was not snapped between the centers legs. It was funny though.
