  1. "daddy coaches" sure do ruin the game and hurts the self confidence of the athlete. grant it most youth coaches are dad coaches but by NO way their kids should come first. i coach my sons basketball team with another dad and we both know,if our kids are not playing to their potential(and thy both are starters) they will be yanked!!!!!! if a ball player is doing better in the game my kid will sit!!!!thats it and he knows it. ive seen "assistant coaches" just worry about their kids on the team than a whole team concept and that burns me. you know, if you know that he is going to have another coach like this guy next year i would ask him if he wants to sit a year.work your speed camp go to high school football games get ready mentally for high school football. good luck!
  2. the pre-season meeting is the best way to go. i usually print out goals schedule etc. for each kid for that meeting .make sure you are ready as a coach cause a ready coach sets the tone. as a parent looking in on my sons football season, i was upset cause they were day- by day coaches with alot of standing around and alot of us were not to happy! treat every kid equal no star treatment .for me the stars get pushed a little harder." parents, if there are any things you are uncomfortable with, call me later that night."hear there beef and talk.its your team.
  3. the last 2 years, i've coached 3rd/4th grade co-ed.if you have got a ball handler you are in good shape. this is a good 2 option play.start out with 2 players on the low block. one forward on opposite side((rebounder). your best shooter comes off of the low pick to corner for the pass and if the pick is executed correctly a wide open jump shot will occur. do not send your shooter to far out for a far shot. if the defense learns to pick up on the shooter and cheats the screen dump it in the low post. bang bang play should work . man 2 man or 2-3 zone.the players have got to want to pick and also a good sharp pass and learn how to catch the pass away from your body.(catch sqoare and shoot!!!) let me know how it works. good luck
  4. we've all dealt with crummy courts. make sure everybody has new shoes (if they could afford them). i was always one of those kids that could'nt.watch what you "spray" or put on the floor, you don't want to make the maintenance guy mad!talk to the head of whoever is in charge of the court.express concern for safety and all that to get it started.now adays, plain old sweat off the forehead works great for me ....good luck
  5. we will begin to start our travel ball practice and i'm coachin with another kids parent. now i'm a set up the offense type half court offense coach and he wants to push it . i push it if the chance but again i would rather set up a play.is anybody on my side?
  6. thanks for the advice.season is long over but we work everyday on his game.as we go one on one im working on his drive. working with his first quick step passed me and i watch him he slows down to the basket sort of looking for me to "recover" instead of going up strong which he goes up weak.to me thats unacceptable, so i grab him and push him off the court (don't worry everybody he doesnt hit the ground!!) but i think your right its time to get more aggressive with him start bangin more! im seeing kids his age fearless with a "you cant stop me attitude"towards the basket and thats where i want him to be!!!! as for away from the ball he 's pretty good already weak side d anticipating the steal setting picks but man he just looks to pass instead of going hard. he looks to score 1on1 with me but come 2on2 etc. he looks to pass everytime until i yell to shoot the ball
  7. I TOO ADD ASST. COACHES. I USED TO RUN IN THE PLAYS BUT I REALLY COULD'NT WATCH WHAT EVERYONE WAS DOING SO I PUT MY COACHES OUT THERE AND COULD WATCH EVERYBODY.ITS TOUGH!CAUSE COME GAME TIME,JOHNNY WASN'T THERE ALOT AND COME GAME TIME,YOU NEED HIM TO CROSS SCREEN AND HE DOESN'T KNOW WHAT TO DO.
  8. my son has got his form for the outside shot working, but we are having trouble on taking it strong on the drive.he seems timid on doing it and wants to rely on his jumper.we work the "triple threat position"one on one but game time,he looks to pass in one on one situations or settles for the jumper.passing is good i know but take it strong to the hole.he is 10 and one of the tallest in the league so i would like to use his size rather than the outside shot . i think the league is too young for post plays cause as soon as the ball gets dumped down low, there is really not alot of time to make a move. there are 4 kids attacking you. i need suggestions or driils to break the habit
  9. UNREAL!!! I TOO HAD A REF(TODAY), THAT ALMOST COST US THE GAME! I NEVER GET ON THE REF'S CAUSE I KNOW THEY LET THE SMALL THINGS GO CAUSE THE KIDS ARE ONLY 9 AND 10 BUT TODAY WAS BAD. WE WERE CRUISIN AND OUR GUARDS WERE GETTING NAILED! NOW IF ITS OBVIOUS CALL IT.BUT I'M NOT GOING TO COMPLAIN CAUSE WE WERE IN THE DRIVER'S SEAT. CALL AFTER CALL THEY WERE GETTING AND OUR KID GOT NAILED SO "REF YOU HAVE GOT TO CALL THAT!"HIS REPLY WAS "YOU ARE 9-0 YOU ARE NOT GOING TO GET THOSE CALLS!!!"WELL UP 18-5 AT HALF TIME WE WON 22-18.BUT I GUESS THAT MAKES THE WIN A LITTLE BETTER!!
  10. 15 DOLLARS AN HOUR IS PRETTY CHEAP!I WOULD LOVE TO PAY THAT! BUT YOUR PRETTY LUCKY BECAUSE I WOULD LOVE OUR SCHOOLS TO GIVE US THAT OPPURTUNITY. FOR US ITS AN INSURANCE THING! YOU COULD ALWAYS ASK YOUR PARENTS LET'S SAY YOU HAVE 10 KIDS ASK THE PARENTS FOR $1.50 FOR EACH KID.THATS A POSSIBILITY!
  11. had a close one today! they threw a 3-2 at us and we havent seen it all year! they had the big guys up front and the guards down low! we are a 9 & 10 year old team so out of ten players,4 can adjust.times are spread out so all kids play same amount of time and it is rare i have my 4 good players together.what are some good ways to beat the 3-2.thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  12. I'VE FOLLOWED BASKETBALL SINCE 1988 SO I WITNESSED THE LAST PART OF OLD SCHOOL BALL BUT LIVING IN CHICAGO CHUCK DALEY OF THE PISTONS WAS AWESOME!YOUR TALKIN' ABOUT TEAM DEFENSE?!! THEY HURT US FOR YEARS.JOE DUMARS WAS THE BEST DEFENDER ON JORDAN.AMAZING!!BACK2BACK CHAMPIONS 89 &90. THE ONLY DOWN SIDE IS WHEN HE ALLOWED ISIAH THOMAS AND BILL LAIMBEER LEAVE THE COURT BEFORE THE END OF GAME 4 WHEN THE BULLS SWEPT EM.THAT WAS WRONG!! CHUCK DALEY IS MY #1.
  13. I COACH 9 & 10 YEAR OLDS AND I STILL GET NERVOUS! NOT A NERVOUS LIKE WE COULD LOSE BUT I WANT THE KIDS AND MYSELF TO PERFORM WELL. I DON'T KNOW UNTIL AFTER THE FIRST QUARTER HOW WELL WE ARE PLAYING THAN ITS ADJUSTMENT TIME.MY WIFE THINKS I'M CRAZY, BUT I LOVE TO COACH AND WATCHING YOUR PLAYERS SUCCEED.ALL EYES ARE ON YOU THE COACH. A WIN IS REWARDING,A LOSS IS A LEARNING SESSION AND THE NEXT GAME, I WILL BE NERVOUS ONCE AGAIN.
  14. THE OTHER DAY WE WON BY 17. WE ARE CURRENTLY 8-0 AND THOUGH IT MAY SEEM LIKE ITS SMOOTH SAILING,I STILL KNOW THE MY KIDS NEED ROOM TO IMPROVE.I HAVE A 3RD AND 4TH GRADE TEAM AND THEY BUST THEIR TALE ALL GAME.NOW ONCE WE ARE UP BY ALOT I FOCUS ON AREA'S LIKE OTHER PLAYERS BRINGING THE BALL UP. MY STARS TO START PASSING TO THE PLAYERS WHO DON'T SCORE AS MUCH ETC. OFFENSE NO PROBLEM! COME DEFENSE,I KEEP MY KIDS MOTIVATED TO PLAY "D". IN NO WAY AM I TRYING TO DESTROY THE OTHER TEAM BECAUSE I'VE BEEN ON THE OTHER SIDE LOOKING IN AND IT ISNT FUN. BUT I DO WANT MY KIDS TO HUSTLE ALL THE TIME.BUT HERE IT COMES, MY WIFE SAYS I SHOULD TAKE IT EASY ON THE OTHER TEAM CAUSE WE ARE UP ALOT. WE ARE AVG. 22PTS. A GAME WHILE GIVING UP 11 SO I'M NOT REALLY WORRYING ABOUT "LOSING A LEAD", I JUST DON'T WANT THE KIDS TO LEARN I DON'T KNOW,"LAZY DEFENSE"!! WHAT DO YOU THINK?
  15. YEAH, FIRST YEAR IS ALWAYS TOUGH!!FIRST,WORK FUNDAMENTALS FIRST PART OF PRACTICE. DRIBBLING, SHOOTING, PASSING,ETC. THE KIDS HAVE GOT TO STAY DISCIPLINED IN PRACTICE FIRST THEN IT WILL CARRY OVER IN GAMES. USE PICKS IN YOUR GAME PLAN.DOWN PICK AND V-CUT AWAY YOUR SHOOTERS GETS GUYS MOVING.LET THE KIDS KNOW THEY CAN'T BE TIMID AND EXECUTE.IT ALSO STARTS WITH THE COACHES!!THE MORE CONFIDENT AND DEMANDING THE COACHES ARE,THE PLAYERS WILL RESPOND BETTER.JUMP ON RAY 'S TOPICS ON DRILLSTHEY SHOULD HELP YOU OUT. BUT FIND PLAYS THAT KEEPS THE OFFENSE FLOWIN!! GOOD LUCK
