  1. Coach when you install this Defense do not think of traditional size and skills when postioning players. What I mean is do not feel you need to have the biggest and baddest kid on the team at the MLB, we use this Def. we play 6 and 7 year olds and my MLB is a small guy but he makes tackle sideline to sideline he is a beast. My two OLB would be kids that I would have thought to put in the middle, but the way this Def. works having them at those outside spot they fill holes that most team at this age want to run. On the Ends I have two kids that like contact they have no other responsibilty but to put pressure of the edge and force every thing to the inside. Other coaches in our park feel that I should have them stay home and read I try to explian to these guy's that we have 6 and 7 yr. old that don't sit and read at school. In other words don't give the kids unrealistic responsiblities you will be surprise with the result. Good Luck........... also something I found on another web site was the E-L-M tree "Effort,Learning and Mistake" teach your kids to give a good effort, make sure they learn from there mistake. That site is FENTON FOOTBALL
  2. I really appreciate all the input. I think what I have to do now is get more involved in what is being taught to the lineman I know that we are not drilling them on steps and etc. I felt that I had a coach that would drill them on these things while I worked on timing with the backfield. So that is a situation I will have to watch more.
  3. If you having success with the wishbone keep running it. To run the DW takes a lot of practice to run it correctly and that is going to take away from your execution of the wishbone. Jack Thanks, What I need now is some type of blocking scheme or Wishbone play book. I tried to look on the DW site but not applying what I see. What would be the best blocking scheme for me? I have nice size and speed for my age and they are pretty athletic. I just need the blocking edge our second game is this weekend. With one win behind us I need some help. Thanks
  4. Since the start of practice I have been running a standard T Off with a Wishbone look. I'm running 3 plays from this set, each back has a play except the fullback he has two dive plays, and I will give him a direction to go on the other two play's Right or Left depending on if I want to use him as a lead or a misdirection look. I feel at some point I will need to add more play's or the DW any ideals? W
  5. We do have the center snap the ball so that tips are sideline to sidelines, getting the a young QB to feel comfrotable under the center is the issue. In our game yesterday the snap became issue as we played into the game the center got lazy and my QB has not figured it out yet. Is there any good info out there on running the wishbone with young kids? I have worked with my son at the QB postion at home I will take plastice lawn chairs and set up an offensive of line and run through the number system. He has it down and he understand what is expected of him but he prefers to play Defensive. and I don't won't to be accussed jof Daddy Ball! Coach, Describe your center exchange? Are you using a standard snap with the ball tip facing the endzone? Some issues you can look for: 1) Center is not bringing the ball up in a straight line from (directly) the ground to the QB's hands (his crotch) hard. 2) QB's hands are not deep into the crotch and the top hand needs to press against the crotch to tell the center where the hand is (this also eliminates #1 often because of hesitation by the center). 3) QB nees to close both hands around ball and pull into the belly as he presses his body and hands into the center to maintain the mesh. 4) The center must step and snap at the same time (he should practice snapping and stepping to the left, right, and forward to make the snap natural). Then work in the QB pressing with him. 5) I have found that if you simply turn the ball so the tips are facing the side lines that this can make it easier to snap the ball for young kids...no ball rotation the ball goes directly into the hands of the QB. Jack
  6. I'm having trouble with gtting a clean exchange. I have a 6 - 7 year old team with 3 player who have played. We run the Wishbone because everyone running the D-Wing, although they have been practicing since the beginnng of August we as a group has had about 9 practices. I was blessed with the player that did not make the D-I team. The good news here is that my guy's arent afriad of contact. we have our 1st game Saturday with a bye next week so I hope that Defense will carry us for the next three weeks until we catch up on offense. We run the 6-3 of Coach Gregory that has worked out well for us in or first scrimmage, if we can only get the ball to my backs we will do some damage.
  7. Coach "Dad" You have a- good problem. As loing as he is willing to play the game and make contact he will or you will find a place for him. and because he is aggressive he will find his comfort zone. So I say in practice play hime all over the place. On defense primarly at first so he can learn how to leverage his body. Then as the season progress let him run the ball in a control scrimmage. He will let you know which he likes. I feel as long as he likes the contact he is a player.
  8. Just start from the beginning. I read somewhere on this forum " What the kid's learn about the game, is more important than what we know about the game." I don't know how old you are, but reference mid 70's college football to your team. You will find that style of play very effect in youth ball. It you’re fundamental "Run, Block and Tackle” you do those thing well they will give you the opportunity to win every Saturday. I believe Woody Hayes once said "When you throw the Ball to much, Three things can happen and two of them are BAD!!!!! Nothing controls youth football like a good power a game. You will see when some one is "running the ball down your throat." It can be pretty demoralizing. To you and your team. Run to give yourself a chance in the 4 qtr to win. And keep visiting this site there is some great advice here. "Hail to The Victory's"
  9. Just wanted to checked in and thank all of you for the great advice. We start reg season this week. We played a practice game last week and won, so of to a good start. The biggest problem so far is getting the "Playstation II Kid's" to play aggressive. I'm working with a coaching staff that rather run plays live, than work on fundmental so I find myself stealing time to get the qualty tackling time in. Any help with this? Without getting into a Power Struggle!!!!!!
  10. I have pulled out my old practice schedule, So I'm set there. Before the 1st practice last night I had no ideal that I would be coaching. The park eneded up with enough player for a 3rd team, and a coach with no staff. So I jump in the first chance I got. We have kids that never played before, some act like they never played outside before (also my son's first year). So yesterday I spent a lot of time working on stance and getting them to line up correctly drills..I do remember from my last experience that getting them to line up for drills or formation was like the beginning to letting them know that being in the right place is the most important part of football. I have not decided what type of offense or defense we run? So I guess me and the coach will get together and decide He has no coaching experience from what he tells me. So I will try to lead without taking over. Any advice............My last coaching experience we where successful....but that was "THEN and this is NOW"
  11. I'm looking for help on coaching 1st year player 8 yr old. Bulldog Jim I like what you say about offensive line play. I would like a practice schedule if any one has any ideals.
