Coaching Youth Fooball - Football Plays

Just a quick note on Coach Rob and my playbooks. They were both designed for the 7-9 year old age group. They could easily be used or adapted to younger or older play, I just think it's important that you understand how they were originally intended.

Here is my official playbook for the fall of 2008 (until I change it). 5-on-5, rusher allowed from 7 yards back, qb cannot run.

NOTE: Each play has different variations beginning with the basic play, the misdirection and sometimes a third option. The idea is to run several things off the same setup without having 50 plays. Take a look at the first play, Pitch Left. That's a simple pitch to the running back sweeping left. If the rusher and mlb key on that I'll fake the pitch and run center drag right (the first option). Another option is to pitch to the hb who then can pass. Another option not listed but I like very much when the corner comes in quickly is to fake the pitch and hit the wideout on the same side running a quick flag.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to coach/teach a zone defense? The kids struggle with receivers crossing through their zone and often it leaves uncovered receivers? I need help explaining it in a way they will understand.

Rep, reps and more reps.

Set up your defense and try and run through as many senarios in practice as time permits. Go over and over responsibilities. They will get it. One thing that has helped me in teaching new concepts is to instruct my players to freeze when I say freeze. We set up our defense and offense. We have our offense run through their routes and the defense run through their coverage assignments. When I see someone out of place I yell freeze and then I take my time showing and explaining to them how they should have played it.

Here are some threads that may help.
