Keys To A Successful Rec. League Season.

Recommended Posts

Definition of rec. (recreation) league – a team of similar age boys or girls of different abilities. Usually randomly selected for the coach every season. Although some leagues (YMCA where I live) will let you keep the same rec team from season to season. Man to man defense only. Usually no tournaments. Practice time varies between 1-2 hours per week.

Some coaches that I have talked to/asked advice from, coach more elite youth teams. Some areas call these type of leagues; Classics, Prep, AAU, Tournament teams, just to name a few. Usually these teams are handpicked or selected through some type of tryout process. Practice varies, but is usually 8 hours per week.

With that being said and from what other rec league coaches have told me, is that the best way to prepare a rec team is as follows:

1. Fundamentals –

• Dribbling

• Passing

• layups

2. Defense –

• correct stance

• rebounding

• talking on defense (calling out screens)

• help defense

• Out let pass

3. Offense –

• No formal offense but set lots of screens

Comments/suggestions. What did I miss?

Thanks,

John

John, right on the money, since I've 'retired' from BBALL, I've been coaching a high level travel softball team and a house or rec softball team, no matter what you do fundimentals in both sports are key. With my travel team we spend a huge amount of time on funidmentals, even more than we do on the house team. Pretty intersting considering that 100+ girls tried out for 4 teams, we got the elite but spent from September until now working on throwing and catching basics. You cannot make those little mistakes that you normally get away with in a rec league. I see the same thing in on my daughters JV bball team, cardio and fundimentals, then more cario and more fundimentals. If your team masters the little stuff you will be ahead of the game.

I made a very interesting discovery the other day...my daughter was on youtube watching Michael Jordan teach the fundimentals, when asked she said she typed 'jordan basketball techniques', she watched a good hour of drills and techniques.
