Texas_D_Coach 14 Report post Posted April 22, 2009 Does anyone have any new plays or playbooks that they really like and want to share? I'm sure some of you have updated your plays since last season.I am mostly interested in the 5 on 5 variety. If so please post them in the playbook forum. Johnp2 21 Report post Posted April 22, 2009 I have updated mine, but it is 8 on 8. The biggest thing I added were more draw-type plays. I can offer one play I added last season that worked like a champ! I plan on running it again this season. It only works if you have a player that can really chunk it. Doesn't matter if he is accurate or not.Typically the first two plays I the game, I perform the following:1. Get the one player who can throw the ball the farthest. Put him at QB and your "real" QB at Center.2. First play, have ALL players (except the Center who just stands there) run a Go route as fast as they can.3. The QB drops back immediately, and simply chunks it as far as he can, well past the defense.4. I'll then make a loud comment to the QB (so the other team/coach can hear), "Chad, you *have* to wait until someone gets open!" As I walk back to the huddle, I'll say, "Andrew (who is the 'real' QB), you show them how to do it!"5. Call the same play, but have the QB and Center switch.6. This time, have the QB drop back and wait---looking for someone really deep, and then after a count of four he simply hands off to the Center who usually has a LOT of room to run.I know it sounds too simple, but it worked 100% of the time against 8-9 year olds last season.I personally think this works well with 8 on 8. I'll try setting it up like you suggest and see how it works for us this weekend. I like your description and think it could work well even in 5 on 5. Johnp2 21 Report post Posted April 23, 2009 It's not a home run play. When I need 15 yards, that play gives me 10. When I need five yards, that play gives me 10. Thus it is consistent. 10 yards is a lot when you have eight defenders.Of course, you'd be lucky to have it work more than once a game. As mentioned, I start out with it, as the opposing coach (unless he knows me) has little idea on how I coach---so I catch them off guard with this to keep them on their heels the rest of the game (and we usually have more trickery coming---and are proud of it). :-) Even against stingy zones, something happens to kids these age when on the first play, they see the entire line full-throttle ahead and past them. Their natural instict is to "chase"----if only for a few seconds. It's a good way to set the tone so you can begin spreading the ball around to your lesser-skilled players, ensuring that the defense will respect what you call. I try to keep the defense off-balance the first play, the last play, and every play in between. Ha!
Coach Rob 26 Report post Posted April 23, 2009 John? Is rushing on defense allowed in your league?
Orange 26 Report post Posted April 23, 2009 My brother is coaching an I-9 team (12 & under) in Jacksonville and he claims he has a play that always gets yards. I have yet to try it but I'll add it to the playbook. He said he got the idea when he saw an 8 & under team running it. Qb under center, trips right (or left). On the snap the two innermost receivers run go routes. The center takes the ball and runs down the los towards the direction of the receivers. The outtermost receiver comes down the los for a potential reverse handoff. He said they run it a few times with the center faking the reverse. Eventually they run the actual reverse. He says that both runs gain a minimum of 10 yards. My concern would be if the defense lines up a defender right over center, to which he said he has his fastest player at center who can beat them and the defender always hesitates on the potential reverse. Johnp2 21 Report post Posted April 23, 2009 John? Is rushing on defense allowed in your league?Rushing is allowed. However, there are some prerequisites:1. Teams are allowed to rush only once per four downs.2. A team can rush up to two players, who must be five yards off the line of scrimmage.3. The team must announce they are rushing before the play begins---and also indicate which player(s) will be rushing. The QB is only allowed to run if he is rushed. Pretty much on every play last season when we were rushed, we just had our QB take off running.
