Recommended Posts

Guest vbkatie3

I just got a job coaching high school girls volleyball, but these girls do not have any skills at all... I'm not sure what to look for at tryouts and I'm not sure what to have the girls do to tryout.. HELP I just got out of college where I played DI v-ball, but I have no idea what to do for tryouts

It is hard being a first time coach, I just did it last year. Luckily enough there was just enough girls to play that I didn't have to go through try-outs. First of all you need to make sure the girls are conditioned. Run the heck out of them. If they can't do sprints or wall block jumps then it might be difficult for them to move during a game. Look for the basics- passing, setting, hitting. They look for how well they communicate. Being a player you should know how important it is for them to talk. Last but certainly not least. Look at their attitudes. If they got a stinky attitude and doesn't show effort to even help those around them then you might have problems. That is a first sign that she is not a team player. You need someone who can take criticism but in turn provide some. Don't forget to tell them to have fun and smile. It's just a game. Hope this helps.

HERES MY ADVISE*I AM IN 8TH GRADE AND A CAPTAIN OF MY JR. HIGH TEAM, ALL THOUGH YOUNG, VERY EXPERIENCED W/ WARMUPS AND THE GAMES IF QUES. EMAIL ME BACK..

first warm - up with stretchs and then jog around the gym, stop and then stand still in lines:

what u do is put them in ready position:

when u slap the ball they slap the ball with both hands and yell defense.

in what ever direction u move the ball to the team should move with you with short choppy steps.

make a mark of whos keeping up with you. u dont want laziness when youre playing volleyball. do happy feet but only for 30 sec. trust me they will get tired. do a diving stance from that position. when you say go they should dive down laying on stomach with hands tucked under then pop back up to ready position.

next:

let them find a partner and let them hit to eachother. make note of who's hitting high enough for a setter, and who looks like would be a good setter. have them warm up arms with throwing to ground to warm up.

next:

do a serving drill seperate the girls on to each side of the volleyball court. have them stand in a line and get three serves each. have a coach on each side take notes of their name, and if where the placement of their serve was 1. was it out? 2. was it in a corner? 3. was it placed to a setter(bad). then do a 3v3 drill when u make keep the same seperations and the first three girls go onto the court. same on the other side.*they play a game of 1 point and must do 3 hits. bump, set, spike. winner stays on. and moves to other side.

next:

work on spiking.

have the girls separated to start but they switch from one lineto another. one line on the left side of the net. the coach will set the ball for you. after the girl will go onto the next line which would be on the other side of the net on the opposite side, so there will be no spiking into eachother. in this line they will help coach and just toss the girls to explain it to them. u can also use this drill for warm ups before games along w/ warm ups of arms.(explained up top)

IF U NEED ANYMORE DRILLS AND U FIND THESE HELPFUL, EMAIL ME FOR PLENTY MORE. UR WELCOME

You need to test for athletic ability. Once you find your athletes, hopefully you can teach the skills
