dhebert 0 Report post Posted September 13, 2010 Some background info - we play 5v5 flag football, 11-13 year old age range with generally NFL flag football rules except the rusher starts from 10 yards back instead of 7. My team has several exceptionally quick players but we are somewhat vertically challenged. In our next game we are playing a team that has at least 2 kids that are approaching 6' tall, while my tallest player is no taller than 5' or so. My question is this, does anyone have any good techniques or drills that would help my players play good pass defense against these guys? Hard to defend against the standard jump ball but definitely they can keep up with the receivers. Any help would be appreciated.
Orange 26 Report post Posted October 19, 2010 Sorry for the late reply. Height can be a challenge especially giving up a foot. My advice would be to get as close to the receivers as possible, I mean like right up against them until you're almost stepping on them. Don't give them any room to breathe. If your guys are truly quicker than this should be possible. Without any breathing room it will make catching harder and there will be little room to maneuver to make a catch. This technique will help negate the height advantage BUT as with anything you give something up. There is a stronger possibility of pass interference. Also, playing that close could cause them to get burned on longer passing plays. But against the shorter type passes that look to exploit the height advantage, you'll have a good chance playing really tight.
