Starting A Volleyball Program

Recommended Posts

My husband and I want to start a volleyball program at our local school similar to Little Dribblers. We are unsure about the court specifications for 7 year olds. If you have any information, please let me know.

Hello,

I was wondering, what are Little Dribblers. By the way, when you start with kids of 7 years old, perhaps even younger, I should start with circulation volleyball. On this forum I wrote allready something about this method/game.

sanpat,

I had to check-out "Little Dribbler's" website to see what they were all about, as I am unaware of them, particularily in the central atlantic coast area. Seems like an interesting group. But then any group that gets kids playing something is ok with me.

I really think you should talk to Bert about circulation volleyball. I have just begun to look into it, and it might be just what you're looking for. Check out Bert's emails on this site, you will find some links to others that will get you started.

The USA Volleyball Rules only address the height of the net for "10 years and younger" as 7 feet. Which means that the court stays the same: 9 meters by 9 meters.

However, if I were going to start an instructional group for 1st through 4th graders, I would adjust the court to..... well, whatever I felt was appropriate for that age group, or even for the ability of the players, regardless of age. What the heck, whatever it takes to let them PLAY seems about right to me. Circulation volleyball also has court sizes adjusted by age which I'm sure would be just fine.

If I were you, I wouldn't worry about some official sanction for your club. Just get them started playing and move them towards "regulation play" as they grow and their skills improve.

Good luck, and let us know if we can help.

john
