St_TJanet 0 Report post Posted February 9, 2005 Hi All,I must be doing something right. We are now 3 - 1. Last night we beat the team that we received our only loss from, so the girls are really excited. As you recall, I know next to nothing about volleyball and am currently coaching a 1st year group of 6th graders. I have received so much valuable information from this board and I wish I could thank each and every one of you personally.Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!! Keep the advice and suggested reading, video's and other information coming.I'm currently letting everyone I know (with any kind of contact to sports) that I am interested in coaches clinics and/or volleyball camps. I currently have one invitation to "assist" at a week long summer camp for grades 6 - 8. If you know of any way I can find coaching clinics or camps in Central Illinois, please let me know. I've surfed the web a bit and contacted the University of Illinois, but haven't had much luck and UofI doesn't do any.Janet
fmfjohn 0 Report post Posted February 9, 2005 Janet,It's really great to hear that you're having such a good time. Congradulations! You might try www.greatlakesvolleyball.org as a source for camp/clinic information. It is your regional United States Volleyball org. and I expect that if they don't have the information, they can steer you to it.Now that you're a veteran, you might consider joining AVCA, the American Volleyball Coaches Assoc. (see www.usav.org) and even if you don't join, their website has some generally good info. (and at the least, a good, if not cheap, book and video list.Speaking of which.... another website you might find interesting is www.championshipproductions.com.They have about as complete a collection of volleyball titles as you can find. While they aren't cheap either, about $40.00 each, they deliver promptly and again, have a great selection. I don't think you could go to far wrong with any of the Mary Wise "Foundations for Successful Volleyball" series, or John Dunning's "Becoming a Champion" series. But again, there is such a wide range of topics covered that it's hard to decide. Personnally, after more than 40 years of volleyball, I recently found Kathleen DeBoer's videos and her book, "Gender and Competition" to be something I should have read years ago.Seems like you're off and running. Good luck, and keep in touch.john
medpbuch 0 Report post Posted February 10, 2005 Hi Janet, Congratulations on your success! I too am coaching for the first time in a long time, a group of first year 6th graders in Athens, just north of Springfield. I was curious where you were in central Illinois? Our athletic director decided that we would only have intramurals this year so we have 30 girls and have only played against each other so far. This Saturday, the AD has scheduled a jamboree and we will be playing three other schools. The girls are really excited. I just want them to learn the fundamentals and basics of volleyball. They've been doing very well so far. That's great you are looking at coaches clinics and camps. I wonder if any of the local high schools in your area are doing volleyball camps? If not, just sitting down with other coaches can be invaluable. What works? What doesn't? How to motivate? Drills? This site has really helped me with drills and other ideas. Our new goal is for all of our girls to be BALL HOGS! They couldn't believe I told them to do that but I think it's starting to sink in. Good luck to you and again, congrats!Mary Ellen
