Can anyone tell me more about these programs? Are they just for professional coaches or are they something that would be benefical for me to attend as a beginning coach? Are there any other coaches clinics that would be helpful? Do you know of any upcoming in the Kansas City or Saint Louis area, or anywhere I can find more info?

I would recommende taking the IMPACT course as it is great for begining coaches. Many grade schools and all club teams require this in order to coach . CAP I is mainly for high school coaches and is more advanced than the IMPACT. CAP II is for college and international coaching and is the most advanced class USAV offers. If coachingis something you are going to stay with I would take IMPACT definately.

As interested and involved as you are, you really should do the Impact course, and you'll probably want to do the Level 1 later. It may not be the absolute best thing that you ever did to improve your coaching, but it's a step in that direction.

If I remember correctly IMPACT was more the fundamental does and don'ts of coaching. Things like how to treat players and how not to treat players, appropriate and inappropriate behavior, things like that. CAP I actually gets more into the actual coaching aspect of it. Things like fundamental skills, how to teach skills, drills, strategy, player & team development are more the focus of the CAP I. It dives into the current school of thought in regard to coaching. IMPACT is more stagnant in it's course material. Really, anyone can benefit from the CAP clinics, it is not just directed at H.S. and advanced coaches. Everyone should be able to take quite a bit away and apply in real-life type situations.

Nearly all governing bodies require some type of basic coaching class/clinic. IMPACT is required of anyone who is coaching in USAV. There are plenty of IMPACT clinics in the KC area. Check the website above. There probably will not be any offered until later in the fall, probably after the fall H.S. and college season is over. The IMPACT clinic will cost you about $25.00 to attend; that includes being certified and a textbook you get to keep. CAP is considerably more expensive and will require you to travel to wherever it is at. There is an at home CAP I certification offered where you can do most of it from your home but you still have to attend several hours of training wherever the clinic is held, but the full CAP clinic takes an entire weekend.

Hi there. I consider myself a beginner coach (three seasons of ymca, 10 and under girls). I took the Cap 1 course this weekend and really learned a lot. There were concepts that I have read about, but actually seeing and doing it made a big difference in my understanding. Having said that, I think it was too advanced for where I'm at in terms of understanding the game. Also, it was definately geared towards older kids playing a much more sophisticated game than my girls are capable of at this time. In retrospect, I think I would have been better off finding something that would be more specific for my age group of girls, to quote the instructor "tactics are determined by the technical ability of the team." In other words, learning and teaching an offensive system is basically irrelevant if your kids can't pass the ball. Hope this help and let me know if you have specific questions. Ron

I totally agree with you Ron. I like the IMPACT class for basic lower level coaching like grade school. It has the basics of coaching theory. Once youstart doingthe CAP I and II you are getting into more technical stuff you may never use. It is a good thing to have on a resume if you are goin to be coaching for a while. But I guarantee you will not use a lot of the stuff unless, like Ron said, you have a team thst can pass the ball.

I may be late on this post, but it should help for any future searchers...

As someone who has done all the beginning courses, has vast playing experience and some coaching experience

I have taken the Following:

USAV Impact Training (now required by USA Volleyball in order to coach Club)

CAP I

ASEP's Coaching Principles & Sports First Aid (USAV equivalent to Impact)

here is my take... Impact is a pretty much a CYA course on Ethics, Do's & don'ts of Coaching, Coach/Player Interaction and

the benefits of USAV Training.

CAP I teaches in depth skills and knowledge for coaching. Although it can be used at all levels, its geared toward the Higher

aged youth brackets (14U and above). The topics and instructions are top notch and detailed. It touches fundamentals and

in direct skills related to the sport. ** I took a lot more away from this than I did ASEP or Impact

ASEP bridges the GAP between the two. Its more of an overall generalized coaching program and not sport specific, but does

related to all sports with examples from all sports during the course. I would also highly recommend this. I Only took this course

as a certification requirement to Coach witihin the High School s in my state of residence. **I took more away from this that I did Impact.
