Christian Coaching Principles

As a coach, Jesus Christ not only impacted billions of people with his message, but he impacted the lives of many people when he was alive, he inspired men and women that walked with him to carry out his message unto death, he is valued as a great leader by people who do not even believe in his message, and his message and life story has been passed down and advanced from generation to generation for the past two thousand years.

After learning about these unique qualities about Christ from a leadership perspective, not only can I make a strong argument about him being the greatest leader of all-time, but there are several different leadership concepts that we can all learn from Jesus as well. For the next few moments, I want to share with you the following key leadership qualities that we can all learn from Christ.

Coaching Principle #1
Jesus Christ Shows Us That Coaches Must Have Courage

When you read about the life of Christ, you not only learn about an amazing man, but you see a leader who had the courage to speak the truth with it was not popular, stand up to any challenge or obstacle that came his way, and give his life for the betterment of mankind. These three experiences in the life of Jesus Christ reveal to us how powerful we can become as leaders when we have courage.

Coaching Principle #2
Jesus Christ Shows Us That Coaches Must Have a Purpose

The fascinating thing about the life of Christ is that he not only took time to help people in need, and reach out to those who others may have considered outcasts, but he also stayed focused on his ultimate purpose as a leader. As leaders, it's great to take time for extra things in our life, but it's also important that we stay focused on our initial purpose and vision as a leader regardless of how hard or rough are circumstances might be in life.

Coaching Principle #3
Jesus Christ Shows Us That Coaches Must Be Forgiving

I think one of the hardest things to understand as a leader with so much pressure riding on your job is that everyone who works with you is going to make a mistake and no one is going to be perfect at their job. In essence, at some point, someone who works with you may frustrate you, but how you deal with that person can determine your success as a leader. In the life of Jesus Christ, Peter, one of Jesus' closest disciples who would start the first church, not only denied, rejected, and betrayed Christ, but he made many mistakes walking with Christ as well. In the midst of all these mistakes, Jesus not only forgave Peter, but he empowered Peter to continue his work on the earth. This powerful truth shows us that a compassionate and forgiving leader can go a long ways towards helping a team or organization be successful in the 21st Century.

Coaching Principle #4
Jesus Christ Shows Us That Coaches Must Have Integrity and Be Honest

Any leader who desires to be effective in the 21st Century with this emerging generation in America must be a leader that has integrity and is honest. When you learn about the life of Christ as a leader, you will find that he was not only honest with everyone, but he was a man of Integrity. In essence, he was a leader that not only talked the talk, but be lived out his message for others to see as well. As leaders, it's crucial that we are honest and possess integrity like Christ.

Coaching Principle #5
Jesus Christ Shows Us That Coaches Must Have Compassion for Others

When you study the life of Christ from a leadership perspective, one of the key aspects of his effectiveness as a leader was his deep compassion for others. In essence, Jesus Christ was a leader that showed great compassion for everyone regardless of who they were within his circle of influence. This compassion for people in need and those that others may not have cared about is easily seen in several different stories throughout the Bible. As leaders who desire to be great, it's crucial that we have compassion for others in need and those who have the opportunity to serve as leaders.

Coaching Principle #6
Jesus Christ Shows Us That Great Coaches Leave a Legacy

Although I believe there are many qualities that make up a great coach, for me personally, the key quality to me that determines whether a leader was great or not is their legacy. Basically, any leader that desires to be great must be someone that not only makes others around them better, but leaves a legacy for future leaders to carry out past their lifetime. As a leader, Jesus Christ not only left a legacy, but he made others around him better. If anyone desires to be a great leader, it's crucial that they leave a legacy in their profession and field of interest and make people around them better.

Developing Our Young People

You know I started this like I probably start most things in my life. I wanted to do something but I wasn't really sure how to do it. So I started it hoping someone else would step up and carry it through. Or maybe I just thought God would do it for me. Either way not much has happened.

I have a very strong opinion on where we should be leading our young people I just don't know how to accomplish that. I mean if it really came down to it I wouldn't even probably come out and say that I am a christian to anyone outside my immediate circle of friends because deep down I know I am lacking in so many ways. But that's kind of the point isn't it? We are all lacking in so many ways as adults. We keep moving the line for what is acceptable and we slowly fade back to our sinful ways. So what exactly do we expect our young people to do? If we as adults can't even figure it out how are we to develop young people with strong moral character? The hardest thing for me is giving up that control to Him. Wanting what God wants not what I want. It's just seems like an impossible task to me sometimes.

I don't know about you but I have serious doubts about my priorities. I have no doubt about my faith. I believe in a greater being. My confusion comes from me and my actions not from our God as his actions. Paul said it perfectly in Romans 3:28 - A person is made right with God through Faith. Not good works, not suffering or study. I think that I am a good father as we go to church, my kids attend Sunday School and we discuss God (Occasionally). But if I compare the amount of time we have spent as a family attending youth sports functions - practice, camps, games, and training in the backyard and I compare it to the time we have spent become closer to our God it makes me realize that my priorities are way out of wack.

If you look at society as a whole it is probably the same reflection. The Sports Training Industry is a multi-billion dollar industry. In our town we have these sports training centers all over now, along with personal coaches for all the different sports. I think we are on the wrong path here. Youth sports is supposed to be something that our kids play for fun. It is supposed to teach them about committment, team work, responsibility and it is supposed to be about developing good character, but these days it seems to be more about creating the next NFL, MLB or NBA star.

Let's get real, what are the odds that any player you coach, including your own child, is going to play professionally? Probably not much better than your chances of winning the lottery. Even if one of them does make it, they can only play for so long and then what? Speaking for myself I am trying to realine my priorities and focus on something more important than a future NBA contract. I want my sons and daughter to sign a long term contract with God. I want them to know about the God who loves them so much that he sent his only son to save them.

No promises but I am going to try and do a better job of getting this part of the forum going. Maybe with a little encouragement from all of you we can take all of our kids in a better direction whatever that may be.

Bobby Bowden Message

I went to two of the Nike COY clinics this year and got to attend some nice sessions. While my preference would be to have been at the SW conclave etc circumstances didnt line up. This isnt in the proper folder, because there wasnt one for it, but I felt very strongly convicted to share what I heard.

Bobby Bowden was the keynote speaker today. Along with his usual circuit stories and jokes he spoke from his heart. He was sincere and pained when he spoke. He mentioned all the messed up kids he gets these days, so much different than in the past. He said most of the kids he gets now days are raised my moms, not by men. He said most have never had anyone tell them no. He said they are so lost, even as great athletes and big men on campus they are so lost. They try to fill the void in their lives with many things, alcohol, drugs, sex, power, money, status, relationships but so many of them are miserable because they are trying to fill a void that can only be filled by Christ and Christ alone. He says FCA has been such a huge blessing for his program, so many of his kids have been turned around completely by coming to a relationshio with the Lord. The anger, the guilt, the huge hole gets filled and is just a huge weight lifted from ones shoulders. Once the kids that dont have Christ living in them, come to a saving relationship with Him it is night and day he told us. He also shared what it blessing it was to have the Lord by his side though his ups and downs. He and Tom Osborne both start every coaches meeting with a devotional, we are going to do that this year instead of just our base short prayer.

He begged coaches to get FCA involved in their program and turn their programs over to be run by the Book, the good book. HE rightfully told us that many of us that coach in difficult areas that we are in a huge position to influence kids, because they have no male role models, or the few they do have are rap stars or drug dealers. It is a huge responsibility that requires diligence, the kids are watching every move. We have been overt in our program but Im convinced we should be more so and plan on getting FCA deeply involved in our program.

Tyrone Willingham had about the same thing to say 3 weeks ago and Tom Osborne has been saying the same thing for years. Seeing those guys speak with such conviction and being so sure and at such Peace was quite inspirational to me. None of those guys mentioned wins they talked about influencing young men for eternity. Thats how I want to coach and be remembered for. Ive never heard any of those 3 use a bad word or say anything negative about anyone, and golly Willingham may have reason to speak otherwise, BTW he takes responsibilty for every loss on his shoulders alone. Im not a ND or Washington fan but golly Im a big Tyrone Willingham fan now, he was a 5'9" 139 lb walk on QB at Michigan State BTW. Got a chance to talk to coach Bowden, for about 2 minutes, what a nice person and Im no big FSU guy either. I pride myself on never getting uptight on the game field just like those guys and never raising my voice there, want to make sure that happens on the practice field as well this year amoung a few other small but important changes.

Our program has seen over 400 boys out of maybe 2500 make a decision for Christ, but we really laxed in our efforts last year. We were missing it this last year, it wasnt #1 priority and it showed in several of my Omaha teams. We have a church helping us out with manpower and coaches for the first time as of 1/1/07 and I feel real good about how that all came together today after listening to one of the all time greats. Man is he short, If I get up to 77 Im probebly gonna be like 5 feet tall, I towered over him and Im a very short 5'9" LOL.
