I've been toing with the idea of an option style offense for a couple of years, but could never figure out a way to di it, that I liked.

We play 5 on 5 with NFL Flag rules. QB can't run, 1 backward toss, pitch, etc per play, any pass or toss that goes forward must cross the LOS, no blocking....

It's extremely rare to see any man on man coverage, as well. Any ideas?

I know it will be tough for something to be continuously run for long stretches, but I've thought of trying to implement it as a no huddle hurry up and run it 3-4 plays in a row.

The biggest challenge is your QB can't run, which limits your "options" in the option offense. The pitches having to be behind the los also takes away another option. You mentioned the other part which is, most teams play a zone D, so taking advantage of different looks on defense usually isn't there.

The one thing we have done in the past is a shovel pass across the line, like a normal pass, to a WR running a crossing route just a few yards out from the LOS, as the QB rolls the opposite direction.

We also do a lot of delayed tosses to the RB, with the purpose of sucking in the rusher and giving the zones a little time to drop back. Rushers have to start from ten yards back in our league, so it gives the QB a chance to check one or two routes then pitch.

We've had a decent amount of success with that. So many teams 'over rush" the QB

I was thinking of combining the two. Using a slight roll with a crossing WR and holding in an RB with the option to toss to him once the rusher is sucked in....while sending the center on a slant to the side the WR came from.

I've also thought of using the fifth player as a TE, lined up next to the center and sending him straight up the middle.

Then again, I could just go to a quick handoff to an RB and have him run the "QB" spot...:) I am known to try to over coach a bit...

I know this topic is a little older, but thought I would add something to it. I coach 2nd and 3rd grade 5 on 5 NFL rules flag football. QB cant run past the line of scrimmage. I too have been toying with the option. So after some trial and error I designed one play that worked pretty well though not a true option. I have them line up in a balanced formation and QB and RB run together parallel to a WR when they hike the ball. The WR is told to run between the QB and RB. Sometimes we give it to WR as a reverse and sometimes he fakes it he has it. The DE usually bites on the reverse forgetting about the RB who just takes a handoff from the QB. it works pretty well especially if the defense is biting on reverses.

I also coach 2nd and 3rd grade boys in a 5 on 5 NFL flag league. I run the option almost exclusively, all my kids can run but I don't have a much in the way of a passing QB. The way I get away with it is I have the QB and RB in the shotgun, when the ball is snapped the QB gives the ball to the RB and THEN they run the option. This way the original RB is now the QB (in terms of the option) and he can run setting up a true option set. Works pretty well against man and zone. I will also run the option to the WR side and give it to the WR on the reverse. I don't really have anyone who can throw so we don't pass much when we do it is more of a shuffle pass off the option look.

Took me a full season to implement and get the boys to maintain the option alignment, but once they figured it out we took the league by storm since no one had seen it before.

Hope that helps!

I run the option a lot. I have WR come in motion behind the QB (like Army or Navy running the wing T). The QB hands off to the RB and we are off make sure the WR keeps the correct spacing. Have the RB option the outside player if they play a zone man-to-man should be easier. The QB should know the speed of each player to determined when to snap the ball. After a few times you can run a reverse with the other WR.

I hope this helps
