  1. We had that same problem our first week. Our ends were getting to excited and stop doing what they were suppose to. Which is go up field first and read the play from there. By doing that they either force the rb back inside or make them run further away from the LOS(stringing them out),which give the db's time get in the play. We run a pursuit drill. Take 5 sled bags and set them up as O linemen. Take some cones and set them up starting five yards off the ball going down each side line(full width of a game field) up to 35 or 40 yards. Place one cone 2 yards deep(behind LOS) on each side of the OL tackles directly in front of ur DE'S and one evn with the first cone 2 yards over to the outside .Then one cone each side 2 yards deep in front of ur CB'S.Then set up your defense. Have one coach on the bag that represents the center. You or another coach stand behind him with a ball. The coach on the bag will tilt the bag back simulating a ball snap. The coach with the ball will run either Lt or Rt. Telling the kids the direction of the play. Now ....The DE to the play side should go(FAST) to the cone right in front of him touch it then go to the cone to the outside and jog in place .The cb PS is back peddle till he see's the play coming his way then bolt to the cone in front of him. The back side DE seeing the play is to the other side WILL shoot up and run right down behind the line of scrimmage to the other DE. Then the nose and tackles have to hit the bag in front of him(if there is one) Then run as follows… Now all the other defenders have to run as fast as they can to a cone on the sidelines in the direction the coach moves . The first 2 cones should either be the PS safety or PS linebacker(who ever is faster). After that its a race for the other defenders to get to the next cones first. If there is someone @ a cone he should move down to the next one. There should never be more than one defender @ a cone except the furthest one away. By doing this no one is running in the same lane. Now they have to sprint and then have to jog in place once they get to a cone until you blow the whistle. This will teach them to pursue play till they hear the whistle ,and get them in shape. This drill has worked great for us .We have only given up 6 points in the last two games and no runs to the outside. A plus is the kids love it . Good luck sorry so long….. Coach Ron
  2. 2nd league game in the bank. Won a tough game against a really good team. Defensive struggle.(6-0) We killed our selves ona few big plays with bad penalties,But we moved the ball well when we had to. Were finally home for the first time this coming weekend. Coach Ron
  3. Coach with mine .I took all my plays and shrunk them so I have 4 on a page then I have my cover sheet with all the play calls. I have all the sheet laminated and punched a hole through the corner and put a key ring on it. Its all protected and easy to look through. I don't use it much now ,because I run a no huddle ,so I have to be fast in calling my plays in with hand signals.. But it works great when I do huddle them. Good luck!
  4. Winston, I had my play book laminated @ kinkos .It keeps it dry and clean.Plus I can use a dry erase marker during practice or game day to write notes or add plays..
  5. Jwa, I had the same problem with one of my QB'S. He's a very smart kid who was affraid to mess up. After our first scrimmage he looked upset. So @ the next practice I pulled him aside and had a little heart to heart with him. I asked what he was thinking after the game and if he was having fun. Of course he said"yes",but I told him I thought he was trying to hard and was to worried about messing up. I said that he shouldn't worry about what was going to happen of ech play, but to enjoy himself like he was playing in a neighborhood game. I said you your miserable here why show up. Like you said he seem to stiffin up and not move well. Well He's a lefty so I told that he should be moving around like Steve Young or Mike Vick. Be loose and have fun. Bingo he took my advice and he played very well in our game Sunday. I'm kinda Jekel and HYde @ practice. I give the kids a little bit of freedom, but when its time to get serious I let em know. Its funny cause I only yell during full team drills so all the kids can hear me.,but If I raise my voice any other time ,because of to much fooling around or talking while the coaches are teaching. You could hear a pin drop. The kid go oh sh!$!. He must be mad. I find that yelling all the time the kids get use to you,but if you only go off when you need to. The kids pay attention. Good luck coach. Coach Ron
  6. I felt the same way as most of you,but My local HS coach uses the cut block on a regular basis. Since I'm using his offense I decided to have him give me a course on it. I only have my wr's and play side Tackle cut. I only have them cut on screens to their side. The way I taught my guys to do it was simple. I have them drive the arm and shoulder across the thigh of the defender (NOT @ the knee or below). So its not a direct hit to the player yet it knocks them back far enough to take them out of the play. When I did teach it to the kids.I also showed them how to defend it. Its not as difficult as I thought it would be. The kids caught on quick and I have yet to have someone go down from it. Its very easy to defend and its helped out our defensive players. Now I have 7th+8th grade kids. It might be a bit harder to get across to the younger kids, but my 11-13's have picked it up well! G/L
  7. Well we had our first league Game Sunday. Kids did awesome.I'd like to thank coach Steve and coachcolt for there help. I broke down our blocking with coachcolt help and the kids did great. We won 25-6 against a team that won the championship last year. I had 3 kids score ,Five kids caught passes and four different kids run the ball. Both my qb's threw TD passes and our D played great!. We passes about 70% of the time which just opened up the run game. Now I just have to keep the kids pumped and ready to play. Our first three are on the road. First win as a coach. Feels good!
  8. Thanks coach Steve, I'll take any and all advice .. Coach Colt was good enough to spend close to hour on the phone with me explaining the tecnique's he like to use. I also spoke with the local H.S. coach from whom I picked up the offense I'm running. I believe I'm going to try the zone blocking for most of my run plays and use the pass protection that coach colt suggested. Thanks for all the help Coach Ron
  9. Thanks Coach Mike, We scrimmaged our selves tonight and did OK. It s tough running the no huddle and the defense knows the calls, But I figure my first teamers should be able to run over and through our second team D. This offense is fest or famine .We either hit for the big play or get stuffed. But we get predictable because we can't run as well as we pass. I hope coach colt give me a minute of his time, because I'm just frustrated as ######. I guess I feel I'm the weak link here and I don't want to fail the kids. I really enjoy it and have fun with it, but my lack of knowledge is hurting the team. Thanks Coach Ron
  10. Hello All, Earlier this year I was asked to help coach football and assist with conditioning and such. Well about a week before our training camp started Our OC quit and I was asked to take his place. I have very little experience coaching. Basically I had to learn an offense in about a week and then teach it to 12-13 year old's. I have been able to teach the plays to the skilled players with out much trouble, but I am having trouble with blocking schemes. I know there is a way to do it by numbers, but I haven't been able to find anything on it. I'm running a spread option offense. We do alot of screens and runs to the out side. We are doing fairly well running the offense ,but I think we could be alot better if I had more of an understanding about blocking. Any and All help will be appreciated. Thanks Coach Ron
