  1. I am looking for a playbook with Severe Angle Blocking. I came across it a couple of years ago and can't find it anywhere. I have my own team this year, and want to put in that kind of blocking scheme. If anyone knows where I can get it (free hopefully) that would be great. Thank, Gary
  2. Manny, I couldn't recommend it higher. In my mind, and I am not the know all, or absolute authority it's the easiest way to teach effective blocking techniques other than drive blocking. (Useless at youth level) I recommend widening your splits, or you won't have any severe angles to block against. If you do this have courage. Teach your guys proper technique, fire out on the line, and not straight up, and even your slower guys should be effective. The whole key is technique. I would rather line up in large splits and invite the other team to try and crash through our gaps than bunch up. At least I have a good idea where the will be. But that's just me. It's working for our team. Good Luck! Coach Gary
  3. Coach Gregory, Great Post. I appreciate the specifics on blocking. Every bit of info a line coach can get helps. I happen to think when my guys are run-blocking that if the use their hands they tend to not fire into the defender, and get somewhat timid. I am new to this web site and message board, but what I have seen over and over is the utmost importance of the Offensive line. That is where the game is won or lost, especially at the youth level. The biggest does not always mean the best. Thanks, Coach Gary
  4. Just a quick update. We had our first scrimmage against a team that spanked us last year. We ran the ball beautifully. Our dive option and off-tackle scheme worked better than I had hoped. I feel a certain level of vindication, but that is not the purpose for this post. Coaches if you think that your guys aren't athletic enough to use angles (gap blocking), traps, pulls, you might be wrong. Don't give up on your offensive ideas because someone is telling you our kids can't do that. We ran the other team ragged with 4 different plays. Eight if you count running them to both left and right. One well designed and executed play is worth more than 10 ill-conceived and poorly executed plays. Coach Gary
  5. Brian, Great post. I got a lot from you. I have a very athletic, but kind of smallish son. He is quite competitive, and very driven, but has the disadvantage of being short. He is projected to be 5'6" to 5'8". Are you saying that proper strength training could possibly increase his height at maturity? If so, I would like more information on how to help him accomplish this, without hurting him. Gary
  6. Mike,Jack Inspiring posts. I came in this morning to check replies and I can't wait to get to the practice fields. I think if you can have nine year olds block like they do, I should be able to get through to 13-14 olds. I have taken your admonitions to heart, and this weekend we practiced twice, and I have taken the reigns over of the O-line, and am relegating most of the responsibility for backs/receivers. I think it is having a positive effect. We will find out this Saturday. I'll let you guys know next week how things turn out. Thanks for your words of encouragement. Gary
  7. Coach Ebs, If I were U, I might think about running a very simple offense with a wedge play up the middle, and either off tackle, or sweep plays depening on your relative. Since you don't have 11 players why get too complicated with naming your holes, etc. when all you are going to do is have to change everything when you go to a traditional 11 player game. Try to use some double team blocks, and gap blocks. Once someone learns how to properly gap block, they never forget it, and it can be an awesome block against bigger, faster opponents. Also, don't discount your QB running the ball with your TB, FB leading the way. Coach Gary
  8. Thank you everyone for your replies. First, I couldn't agree with you more about me running the O-line. The problem with that was I was originally asked to "put some plays together." It kind of grew from there. I have put all the blocking schemes together, and handed out a playbook against 50,6-2, and 4-4 defenses. If anything, I alienated both line coaches by sticking my nose in their business. I don't have any problem with helping them teach technique. But politics being politics, I am not the O-line coach. I have since gotten one of the coaches on board. The other one has basically stopped coaching the O-line. I agree with you all the the O-line is the most important aspect of running an offense. We have a very basic running attack using a Dive option as our main running attack. We are running out of an I formation. Should I be optioning the outside contain man on this, or try to block him? We also run a weakside option with the SE crack blocking the DE. Again, thank you for your imput. Coach Gary
  9. I have watched my son play offense for two years now. He is a skill position player, but my concern is not with him, but the techniques being taught to our O line. Needless to say, our offensive line play is at best poor. They are not undersized, but undereffective. The age group is 13-14, and they utilize a strategy of having no splits to 6 inch splits. Of course they do nothing but drive block. Basically what happens is us getting beat off the ball on run plays as well as pass plays. I brought it up in the offseason to them, and their initial reaction was to say that our boys weren't athletic enough to learn new blocking techniques. If we split them out 1-2 feet, we would get beat through the gaps. Well, we get beat how we do it now. Ultimately, I was told to put up, or shut up, now I'm running the offense. We have two weeks until our first game, and I want to be sure that I am not making things worse. I don't coach the line, and I want them to get on board with me. At that age, can we use 2 foot splits, and try trap blocking, gap blocking, and pulling guards?
