  1. smsjr: The things you said sound good. I was wondering on the no steal defences if its just no steal no matter what, or can they steal passes. It seems to me like i've watched kids with these rules before but, i can't remember if they were allowed to steal passes or not. I do remember that for young kids they game seemed to flow really well though. I think it is a good idea.
  2. Really, theres not a lot you can do. Your just stuck between a rock and a hard place. With kids that young, theres going to be a lot of tie ups and it sounds to me like you did the right thing. One thing to remember is that lots of parents, don't really KNOW the game of Basketball. (therefore there kids don't either) They want to see there kid get the ball and score. Instead of all the other aspecks of learning the game, (fundamentals) cause thats really all you work on at that age. You did a good job. Maybe next time offer the parents the wistle :)
  3. I think that you have it right with what you said at the end. Use their agressiveness against them. Have your wings come out higher, then have them cut up looking for the pass. If the defense is over playing them have your pg fake the pass, and your wing go hard "back door" Make sure to use the fake pass. If the wing gets the ball of the back door cut, have her take the ball hard to the hoop. While she's driveing to the hoop have the girls that you have positioned down low still screen away. This opens the wing up for a lay-up or if the defense comes off to gaurd her, she has an easy dish. Good luck, sounds like your in a tough situation playing against older players.
  4. Using the tape would of been a good idea, and my assistant coach called the committe that was in charge the next day and they told him that they had already had some of the other coaches complain about the way this coach was doing things. Then the team that played him the week after me, i guess there game went about the same way and he did raise some heck! After that many complaints they finally said they would call him. (i don't know if they ever did or not). The funny thing is, the second to last week of the season they played a team that everyone had dominated. They hadn't came close to most of the teams. Yet, they had some big kids. This team that had lost all year worked the team of brutes over. They beat them fairly bad. Everyone was glad to see it.
  5. I coached 6th grade this year in a youth league. There was one team that full court pressed every game, all game. This is fine with me, TO A POINT! When we played them we were 3-1 and they were 4-0. There had been a car accident that week and two (my starting pg's) of my kids had to leave at half time (one ended up staying until the end of the third) to go to a funeral. Only one ref showed up. First of all lef me discribe there offensive play. They had 2 kids that were good ball players. The rest of there team was just hugh. One of there 2 players would bring the ball down the court with the 3 "Bruts" behind him. As soon as a defender got infront of the kid with the ball one of the 3 would run up and "take out" the defender. They weren't even setting picks, they would just shoulder into them. There was only 2 illigal picks called all game, and I'll bet my kids hit the ground 10-15 times. I asked the ref. about three min. into the game (during a time out to watch for it). It was mainly just one kid that was laying my kids out, he probably out weighed my biggest kid by 50lbs. There defence was the same as there off. 2 hand pushes all game to the ball handler. The other team might as well been playing football out there. I understand the ref was by himself, but he made a call right infront of him (and me) on my kid when he cut infront of a kid to still the pass (2nd Quarter) there player reached out and grabbed my kid after he caught the ball and the ref call a foul on my kid. Since my kid was right in front of me i just told him, "Good job, you did everything perfect, don't worry about the call, maybe next time you'll get it, good work" The scores table jumped all over me, they told me this was a recreation leuge and we promote sportsmanship...... on and on. I just told them Yeh, i don't want the kid to think he did somthing wrong when we didn't. At half time we were up by two. (My starting PG left to the funeral) In the third they went on a hugh (15-0 or so)run with him gone and there "Phisical Press" Then my other starting gaurd had to leave. Right as he walked out the door they fouled out my center with 4 fouls (I have the tape to prove it) (there biggest kid ended the game with five fouls and was still on the court, i didn't know that until i saw the tape). This left me 13 points down and with 4 players for the 4th quarter. I was pretty upset at this point. Then right at the beginning of the fourth quarter there biggest kid dropped on of my players we a Cheap elbow. My player dropped like a rock. It happened about ten feet from the ref with him looking right at them. He didn't call anything and just went down the court. I ran out to the kid to see if he was knocked out, and the ref. T'ed my for comeing on to the court before he stopped the game. I didn't even look up at him cause by then the kids mom was on the court too. My kid recovered during the "T" and with a mighty shinner was ready to go again. They still had their rough full court press on so my assistant (dad of the kid that just got elbowed) told the score table if you are all about sportsmanship why don't you make him take the full court press off, it's 5-4 and there up by more then ten. They responded with that coach is doing a great job and they wished we could be more like him. We ended up only loseing the scoring battle by 2, 10-8 in the fourth. Me and my team considdered the game a win cause we weer up at half time when our team started shrinking. Was i in the right for running on to the court before the game was stopped? Yes or no, what would you have done?
  6. I coached boys sixth grade and this is what our league did. Yet, my best friend coached girls 6-7 grades this year so i'll say what his league did too. 1. In my league you could play every kind of defence, full court press and all. My friends league was the same as mine but only one team pressed him all year. (I also heard of a team this year in a league where they couldn't press no matter what, one team scored and was down by 1 with 9 sec. left. they had to run back to the half-court line while the other team just held the ball for the win) So I think they need to be allowed to press for atleast the last 2 min. 2. In my and my friends leagues we only had one hour of practice a week. That made it really hard to teach the kids lots of different defences. I had my team play mostly zone this year cause all the other teams ran a m2m so with a half court trap into a zone def. it made it to where lots of teams couldn't run there plays. In the last 2 weeks almost everyone in our league was running the zone. Zone is probably harder to teach because of positioning in my opinion, yet, teaching them how to work through picks at a young age can be hard too. 3. In my opionion yes. I think for one learing both kinds of def.'s helps you to play both better. Also the youth kids need to learn both so that in later years when there coaches want them to play a certain defence the kid knows it. This can look good in try-outs. 4. My personal opinion is that you have to prepare your kids for the team there going to play against to give them the best chance to win. With this statement your team must beable to run both m2m and zones. I believe you must find the other teams weeknesses and use them for your own personal advantage. I also believe that most of the time you need to run the defence that best siutes your team. So, I 100% agree with your statement. Your team has to be versital to win.
  7. Coach7: It sounds to me like you have your team well on their way. I've read all of your comments and agree with all that you've said. I think if I were you I would stay with the hour 1/2 on both drills and playing. This still gives you plenty of time to teach skills and gives the girls plenty of time to play. This will also help save the girls from getting burn't out on the game. It also sounds to me like your team has a killer defence, a good defence will always give you a chance to win the game. If you can get them shooting the ball at a high percent with low tournovers and keep the defence up, Thats the key for success. Also I want to thank you for helping the youth develope there skills. I grew up in a very small town, yet we had a lot of talent. If we would have had a youth program, I fill our team would have been state champions. We still made it to state and had lots of success but never got over the top. I'm only 23 yrs old and have had the oppertunity to coach 6th grade for two years. We just had our last game two weeks ago and this season was intresting to say the least. I moved to a new town and won't to coach in the youth league. They told me that parents all got the first oppertunity to coach there kids. I ended up with on of the seven 6th grade teams. They told me to meet at a gym for the draft, they also told me that the draft was just going to be all of the coaches going into a room and makeing the teams as even as possable after we watched them play for an hour. Well when i got to the drafted we watched the kids play in groups of ten (sixty-five kids) for four minutes each. Then they took us coaches up into a room and we held a real draft. This put me at a hugh disadvantage, all of the other coaches were dads of a six grader so they gave me two third round picks (almost all of the coaches sons were 1st round pick quality). All these dads had watched these kids since second grade, they knew all there names and everything. I had only see these kids for 4 minutes. To make a LONG story short my team ended the season 5-3 and we beat the only team with a better record then us 6-2 the only time we played them. Anyway thanks for your help and good luck on the off season.
