  1. BulldogJim said: "Do what is best for you and your son on your time. But do what is best for the team on the teams time." It will be on our time. Sign-ups are some time away and between sign-ups and the skills assessment, there's usually about a month and a half time period. We'll use that time to as well as after basketball season to get him ready. I didn't realize why he chose middle linebacker until I talked to his coach from last year that told my son that he wouldn't be playing offensive line his whole life. My son asked him what position he sees him playing and the coach, also an defensive assistant at the installation's high school told him he'd make an excellent middle linebacker. So, my son wants to play it. I understand the difficulties in coaching one's own son though and I have to thank you for your responses. Bill
  2. What's the best way you've found to deal with parents of kids that don't really want to play and/or show no effort during practice? I'm sure you've dealt with them, the ones that complain that 'junior' gets no playing time. Thanks. Bill
  3. My son is 11 years-old. The youth center on post currently uses helmets that no longer have warranty protection. The league for his age group is currently 11 to 12 years-old, however, there is talk that it will become 11 to 13 next season. At 13, he'll be in the 8th grade with high school football right around the corner. Someone suggested to me that we should purchase his helmet for next season and just get one that he has that air bladder on the inside so it can adjust throughout the next two years. Is that a good idea, or should we just use what the league provides? Thanks, bw70
  4. Anyone know of good training videos? My son played Center and Defensive Tackle this past season, but would like to play Middle Linebacker next season. Are there any good training videos that are out there that I can use to help him prepare shortly before the season starts? He wants me to help him get ready for the season when we sign him up. There's a couple of months between sign-ups and the skills assessment/draft day. Since I'm gonna coach, I intend on putting him there (MLB) if he shows a sincere interest in playing it. I don't want to be one of those 'favoritism dads' that populate this league in our location. Thanks. bw70
  5. Thanks for all of the input. I really appreciate it. Bill
  6. Hey coaches, When coaching youth football, do you have a head coach, an offensive coach and a defensive coach? What's the normal number of coaches that your teams (in your league) have? Thanks, Bill
  7. Well, as stated in my last post, my sons team was to be playing in the second round of the championship tournament this past Saturday. The game started off pretty good. We're (Tigers) the number 4 team in the brackets and they (Titans) are the number 1 team. The first half was a huge defensive effort and it ended locked at 0. The second half began with the Tigers kicking off. The kickoff teams coach made a bad judgement call and called for an onside kick, which failed. The Titans got the ball and scored on the first play, failing on the conversion making it 6-0. Well, here's where it got ugly. The Titans kicked off and we had relatively good field position. One of the rules in this league is that only 2 kids can blitz at one time. The defensive line can rush on their own, but only 2 additional kids are allowed to blitz. Well, we're a Fort Campbell team playing in the tourney against a Hopkinsville (KY) team with Hopkinsville refs that are known to 'bend' the rules a bit in favor of the local boys. The Titans started blitzing 4-5 kids in addition to the defensive line. Well, I was getting angry with this. I'm talking to our defensive coach on the sideline, to call a TO, talk to the offensive coach and have him bring this up to the refs. Most of these refs also work high school games, and may just have the rules all mixed up in their heads. The defensive coach says to me, "that's how these refs are, they've been this way all year, and we can't change it." ARGGHHH! I'm even more angry now. To have our kids come this far...to get cheated? So, I calmly walk over to the side ref and say, "They can't blitz any more than two kids, and they're bringing 4-5 kids in." His reply, "That's not my call, it's the backfield judge." I said, "Well, shouldn't you call an official TO and confer with all of the refs and ensure that this rule is being broken?" He says, "Like I said coach, this isn't my call." AARRGGHH!! After a third consecutive down, and a third consecutive defensive blitzkrieg causing a huge loss of yards, my phone rings (my wife is watching in the stands). I answer it and she says, "Why are they getting by our boys, what's going on?" I said, "It's not their fault, the Titans are breaking the rules and blitzing more than 2 kids and these STUPID REFS aren't calling it!!" At this time, that same side ref, that wouldn't do his job earlier turns to me and says, "That's it, you're outta here." I hung my phone up and left. I watched the rest of the game from outside of the stadium, and watched the Titans STOP blitzing that many kids. The Titans scored again, and our kids were out of it. The final score ended up being 14-0. I went back in after the game to help the team and my son turn in the equipment. A few of the players parents asked me what exactly happened and when I told them, they agreed with me and said that it was about time one of the coaches said something to the refs about it, since it had been happening all season long. I was told by one of the coaches that after my departure another ref was brought onto the field to ensure it (the 4-5 kid blitzing) didn't happen anymore and the refs told our coaches that they were wrong in not calling it as it happened. This made me even more mad because it could've been prevented if one of the head coaches had spoken up. I really felt that this illegal defensive onslaught took the Tigers right out of the game even before I was ejected. I apologized to the kids, and they said that they thought it was kinda funny and that it didn't bother them. I don't know if the Titans went on to win the championship or not, I just know that they didn't play fair. See (the Tigers) knew that they didn't play fair because in another game (the Titans vs. the other Fort Campbell team), the Titans were caught on video tape switching helmets so kids that are above the weight limit (with red-stickers) can carry the ball. That video was to be brought to the attention of the guy that runs the whole league in Hopkinsville, but the manager of the Fort Campbell teams. Oh well, seasons over. I'm gonna be a head coach next season (provided I don't have to go back to Iraq). We've been told that the Fort Campbell league is going to expand it's age limits, currently 11-12 year olds, to 11-13 year olds. It should bring in more players and we can have more teams and play right here on Fort Campbell instead of in Hopkinsville. Later. Bill
  8. I think if he doesn't go 100% he will get hurt. I could be wrong though. Bill
  9. Thanks for the input Coach G of BT. We've got our first practice tomorrow. Bill
  10. Hey all, My son's team (Tigers) won their game today. It was the first round of the playoffs. They beat a team that they had already beaten in the regular season, only this time, they shut them out 16-0. They played a super game, the OLine (my son's the center) allowed no sacks. Next week they play the top seeded team early then, provided they win, they play in the championship game later that day. The top seeded team (Titans) beat the Tigers in the first game of the season 28-0, but this is a different Tiger team now and I really believe the Titans will underestimate them. The coaches have listened to some of the plays and advice that I have given them (most of which I received from here) and it's really made a difference. Which brings me to a few questions...... Do you think the Option Right play is too complicated for 11-12 Y/O's? It's the Option Right play that is used quite a bit in the NFL. The SF 49ers used it to beat the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Championship game....Joe Montana rolled right and hit Dwight Clark in the end-zone. I recently saw an NFL Films episode that devoted a good ten minutes to the history of that play. It seems like a fairly simple play, but I would like to know if anyone can help with blocking assignments. Many thanks. I'll keep everyone posted on the post-season. In Christ, Bill
  11. They won their second game this weekend. Now we head into the playoff as the number 4 seed. Later.
  12. Wow! That's a pretty long time. Thanks for the input. Bill
  13. Here's a dumb one.....in our league the kids have to have a red sticker on their helmet if they are over 140lbs. (11-12 Y/O). I'm not saying that that's a stupid rule, but what is a stupid rule is that it's okay for the Hopkinsville (Kentucky) teams (we're a Fort Campbell team) to swith helmets, so kids with the red sticker will no longer have the red sticker making them eligible to carry the ball.
  14. How long is everyone's season for 11-12 Year-Olds? Ours is a six week season ending with a playoff tourney on the seventh week. I play in the Hopkinsville, Kentucky youth football league. Bill
  15. Hey, my sons team finally won a game last Saturday. The kids were so happy. It was a defensive effort. They got beat on the opening kickoff then drove down the field for 6 on the ensuing possession. It stayed 6-6 (as these teams rarely convert) for some time until the other team (the Browns) decided to run the QB sneak up the middle. Our DE saw this and grabbed the ball out of his hands and ran it back for the TD (about 60 yards). 12-6 us. We kicked off, defense held them. Our offense is stopped, we punt. This time, on defense we force the fumble (actually..the ball was popped into the air), one of our DT's catches the ball in mid-air and runs it all the way back for the TD (about 40 yards). Unfortunately, the play is called back due to a blocking in the back penalty. It was a bad call because our defensive coach (on the field) was told by the refs that the blocking in the back occured on the previous play! We're a military team that plays in a nearby town....needless to say, we usually get cheated. But that's a whole other post. Later
