  1. I am a second year coach in a CYO basketball league. We got put into a higher league this year and got beat 26-0 in our first game....... Yep 26-0 28 min of bb and not one score......... I have 2 ok players and 6 that struggle we ran a basic motion offence last year screen down and screen away type. I have used this website http://www.coachesclipboard.net/ and selected 3 plays to use. but with no (shaking my head) We had poor passing poor shots and poor boxing out. we work on these most every day at practice. dont know what to do DAVE
  2. i am a 2nd yr coach with 6th graders this year i have the kids do a series of dribbleing drills ie around each leg figure 8s spin dribble crossovers. I also have them tak e 10 jump shots from each side 10 layups from each side and 10 free thros This is all done before practice ....so we can work on offense and defense.we work on off plays without a ball till they have them down. the we work on them with a ball. we try and work in conditioning while we are doing drills. the one thing i would like to see my player s do is practice at game speed and i am struggling in having them do this !!!!!!!!! we have our first scrimmage this next weekend and will see how we are doing. we have 9 kids 3 basketball players and 6 kids that want to try. a cpl of them i will be talking to there parents and trying to explain why there child will get limited playing time.. They will get the minium required by the league. Dave
  3. I am a 6th grade football coach that is having a problem with his o line standing up has anyone run their o linemen from a 4 point stance? are there advantages disadvantages? Of the drills we have used nothing seems to work!!!!!! I know it is something that even high school coachs battle. I have never seen a team run o line out of 4 point Dave
  4. Let me start by saying that it is very important that you take care of this ASAP. Have you talked with the Coach/Father? sit down with him and ask him what struggles he is having coaching .... and yes it can be tough to coach your own kid I know I have higher expectations of my son then i do of other players. Last year I was a position coach and our team was 2-6 I was voted to be the head coach this year and one of our coachs with the star player didnt come out this year "he didnt want to play for a losing team" we have not missed a lick with out the coach Yes we could use his son he is a great player but his dad is his problem. I would talk with him first tell him what you are feeling and if things dont improve quickly the ask him to leave. when you talk to hime talk about the fact that you expect if he leaves he will take his son. see ifn that is what his son would want. At the begining of the season I asked my coaches what their goals where for them and their sons and had them write them down and give them to me. at our coaches meeting each week we reivew them . It has helped keep us as coachs focused on doing the right thing. have had no complaints from parentsand the kids seem to be enjoying it so far Dave
  5. Based on what I read it sounds like your sons coach is doing OK. I coach a 6th grade CYO team My Goal as a head coach is to #1 teach the fundementals of football #2 Have every player that is playing this year want to play next year #3 Teach LIFE LESSONS to my players ie. work ethic, winning ,losing yes losing ( and we have lost) Team work, growth , and christian beliefs. Yes we pray after every practice. In all youth sports kids are playing for one of three reasons 1 they love the sport 2 they want to hang with their friends or 3 their parents are making them be thare. In all cases if we as coaches can capture a player or two and make a differance in their lives them mission accomplished. I was a wrestler and a football player in HS and a wrestler in college. My wrestling coach "talks" to me EVERY DAY of my life and I have not seen him in 12 years or so. So parents understand most coaches are doing their best and coaches keep doing what you do cause we do effect kids lives Dave
  6. I am second year coach of a 6th grade cyo football team. First year i was a position coach now i am the head coach I am frustrated about the lack of enthusium and the fact that we have only 2 kids out of 25 that can hit... The last 2 practices where bad. How do I pull the kids out of this downward spiral??????? I have 3 assistans 2 have many years of experiance at coaching football at the highschool level. So I know they know what they are doing. I am frustrated with my kid also he just doesnt seem to put any effort into it. We are planning a scrimage this wed and we are going to get killed. How do you deal with the frustration
