  1. Usually don't have playbook for 4-6 y/o, all plays depend on how they get up in the morning, sometimes they feel like playing, sometimes they don't. Still have 3 yr returner that's going to be 7 during the season and still acts like 3-4y/o, then have 3 y/o that acts like 5y/o, just doesn't have speed, but listens very well. Since we can have two coaches on field, one usually works with OL & other gives plays. We usually run 5 OL & 3 backs. We call our the name of the person running the ball & which way he is to go, then let the others block. Sounds little on the go, but we practice all plays before game. We even did some motion plays last yr. Hard enough for 9-10 y/o tackle kids to do motion, but we scored about everytime we ran motion play correctly(sometimes OL offsides). On our JV team we do have playbooks though.
  2. Hey guys, been watching your posts and you all have some very good information. Last year was first year as assistant coach for flag football 4-6 y/o and next year the HC wants me to be the OC. Came up with some solid running plays, but don't have much passing, our QB's are probably going to be around 5, but our returning RB's are 6 going on 7 during the fall season. Yes the end around is the best play to score, but we had some big OL last year(no weight limit on line) and did run 5-6 TD's inside, played 8 on 8. Also misdirection on busted plays are usually the plays that score. Best advice, put your stud DL on the ends and make sure they know contain and force action to the inside. Any other advice I can give just let me know and would appreciate any in return. Always looking to learn more about the game of football and cannot wait til Sept for kickoff. My son played for the YMCA this spring, but was not as competative as rec league was.
  3. Not being in your situation, but only have been coaching for two years now and love it, but last year was assistant for flag(4-6 y/o) and assistant for JV tackle(9-10 y/o). I have one son in flag & other in JV tackle. Commisioner wanted me to be HC for flag this yr, because HC has twins in flag & one moving up to 9-10 y/o and wanted to be more involved w/JV team. Commisioner also is HC for JV team and told him that I would be OC for JV and DC for flag, leaving HC still at flag level and DC for JV team. Even though he is officially HC we both run the practices and we both run the games. Missed going to superbowl by 1 game in flag & JV. We communicate w/each other real good and have a really good working relationship, we always discuss the game before and after to make changes, sometimes during, but not much. I love working with the kids and teaching them different skills and the HC's work with the parents, refs, and other HC stuff, which leaves me time to make even our weakest link strong. So being an assistant might be the way to go, but i have two great HC to work with.
