  1. Why do you need try outs? I have been coaching our 8 & 9 year old level for the last 10 years and we do not have try outs. We set a roster limit and its first come first served. We have been to the championship or play-offs every year. Are you wearing pads the first 2 days of practice? you could have a kid that is the faster runner you have ever seen but can he take a hit? Same with hitting pads some kids will hit them all day long but put a live body in front of him and all he wants to do is hug. Some of my 8 year olds who would have been cut thier first year are starting for the high school. If we cut these kids we may have turned them off to the game forever. I would suggest teaching these kids how to play the game and enjoy it. The kids who do not enjoy it will not be back next year
  2. Hey coach the youth program I am with ran into the same problem and we went to the local companies and asked them to donate and we put their name on our pads and on our practice jerseys. You may want to try that . It takes a little leg work but doesnt drain your wallet
  3. Best way to combat this is to get on the board of the program and make some changes. The program I am with has rules about father/coaches. No father is allowed to follow his child up thru the program. The board looks at where the coach openings are and then places new coaches were they are needed. I am the head coach of our 8-9 year old team and have been coaching for 10 years with our program and the rules have worked out very well. We get the people who want to coach football not just coach thier kids. We do lose some people but not many. We feel that we get better coaches this way and our parents like the rulebecause they can see that the startes have earned thier jobs not born into it.
  4. Look at Charlie Weis the new Notre Dame coach. He played in high school but not in college ended up coaching high school football college football then the NFL and now he is head coach of one of the top programs. It can be done.
  5. I have been involved with a youth football program for 10 years and have yet to see a kid burn out in football. The kids that have graduated from our program are having great success at the high school level and the coaches know which kids have played before and who are new. We are a county wide program so our kids can go to 6 different high schools and our program starts with 6 year olds! We talk to al the high schools and they thank us, telling us that they can get into play calling quicker because the kids know the fundamentals of the game already. Talk to your local high school coach. Find out what he would like to have kids know when he gets them and try to run the drills and play calling style, hole numbers ect. Good luck.
