Ipad For Playbook

Recommended Posts

Has anyone ever thought of or devised a way to use an iPad or netbook for their playbook? The idea is to avoid keeping paper copies of the playbook and possibly even having an animated playbook to show younger players exactly what to do on a given play.

I use my ipad alot for coaching, sounds dumb but its easy for me to draw up a play anywhere and send it to my assistant coaches to get instant feedback. I also give it to a high school kid that I have as a assistant of sorts, he tapes each game for me play by play, that allows me to come home and instantly view game film so I can correct problem areas, also give me one ###### of a highlight tape at the end of the season.

I'm currently working on putting together a simple iPad app for my playbook. I'm just exploring the best way to organize the plays. For instance, currently the home page would have "Run" or "Pass", then the next screen will have the formation, then the following screen the plays, then I pick the play and it shows in full screen mode.

I'm trying to think this through and maybe the home screen should have options to either pick "Run" or "Pass" or "Formation" or "Situation"...and then the plays would flow from there. What are your thoughts?

Additional features:

Also, I think it would be so cool if my app could keep a log of the plays that I run so I can review it later on. Possibly even allow me to mark down the gain or loss for each play. Lastly, I would love for my parents to be able to see what play I'm calling while I'm in the huddle--in near real-time.

I think the idea of using an ipad or something of the type is a great idea. However the use of electronic equipment to gain an advantage over an opponent is considered unsportsmanlike and it is actually illegal in HS and above. I know you may be asking "what about headsets and video?" well you can video but you can't watch it, like at halftime or when you change possessions. As for headsets, if the other school does not have them, they can actually ask the ref to disallow the other team to use theirs as well. Usually the ref will ask the other team and leave it up to them. I know this thread was posted in the youth section, not usually associated directly with HS, I'm just passing along information. I personally think the use of touchpads even in athletics is the future but currently the rules at competitive levels don't allow it. If you are just using it to store your drawings of plays, I really don't see anything wrong with it.

I'm new to the forum and just reading through posts. I know this thread started a while back but also noticed a recent post so I figured I'd comment...

iPad has a playmaker app that can be used for 5-11 players and they are constantly making improvements.

It's called FLAG FOOTBALL PLAYMAKER. I believe its like $$9.95. Next update includes printing for wrist coaches etc...

It's at least checking out the free version for those interested. It's worked great for my 5 on 5 team and whipping out plays during the game based o. Defenses is really quick and easy.

I've been using that same app to draw up plays. Its very nice, its free for the first four plays, then you can upgrade if you want more. Well executed app.

Sorry about the late response but B.C. Apps has 5 man flag football app. Dray up your plays and save. Easy to use and I think it was 99 cents. Kids like it, I still find it easier to use a laminated two sided sheet.
