  1. Lou, Any offense is good if executed properly. First, all good zone offenses must include the following elements: 1. Overloads( triangle, box, or diamond). 2. ball reversall is a key. Teach your players to move the ball side to side prior to taking an outside shot. 3. Always have players cutting from behind the zone. This forces defenders to turn their heads and miss assignment creating gaps or seams in the zone. 4. Dribble penetrate the zone. Teach your players to make to defenders come to the ball. If you force two defenders to come to the ball, you are creating a two on one advantage elsewhere. 5. Screen the zone on the weakside and throw skip passes.
  2. I think that some of the suggestion you received from the coaches on this board are good and valid. First of all, any defense you run is only as good as the individual fundamentals of your players. Teach and re-teach man to man defensive fundamentals even if you plan on using zones, box and one, matchup zones, etc. Set priorities on teaching containment of the dribbler by teaching the zig zag drill, driving line drill, and other one-on-one close out drills. To imrove your team defense, spend time on 4-4 shell drills. Lastly, at your level, even if this kid is surrounded by good players, not all players are created equal or should be treated as such. HS
