Help With A Warm Up/stetching Routine

Recommended Posts

1st year coaching 5-6 yo.'s, full contact football. was looking for some ideas on warm up/stretching exercises. Want to keep it relatively simple, but I don't know if kids this age are able to do push-ups/sit-ups/leg lifts etc. in full equiptment. If anyone can offer me any advice/tips or a routine that has worked for them it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I think at the age you are coaching (5-6) year olds, unless you have a lot of out of shape kids, I would keep the conditioning drills to a minimum. In the 2-3 hours you get to spend with the kids per week, the focus should be more on execution of plays. I think you will find at this age, knowledge will win out over conditioning.

I know it is easy to fall into the "gimme 10 pushups" mentality as a football coach, but I feel we should always keep ourselves in check regarding whom we are coaching. The last thing you want is for the kids to hate coming to practice.

Perhaps a solution would be to ask the parents to ensure the kids condition themselves during the week?
