    Rebounding

There are a couple of drills that we do with our kids. 1. Free throw shooting. This allows you to work on free throw shooting at the same time as working on blocking out and picking up the shooter. Teach your low block players to step in front of the player next to them and not go directly to the rim on the shot. 2. Line up three players just inside the free throw line backs away from the basket (defenders). Line up three players just outside the free throw line facing the basket. When the coach shoots, the three players with their backs to the basket must turn and block out the player they are defending. Whoever gets the rebound gets a point the first team to three wins and stays on the court. By the way, we picked up this drill from the coaching database on this site. David
  2. Certification requirements are usually determined by the organization that is hosting your particular league. They will usually tell you what the requirements are when you sign up to coach. I coach my children through many different organizations and each one has a different requirement or not requirement of certification. Even though I may have a certain certification for one organization in may not be valid for another organization. Bottom line contact the organization that you want to coach for and find out what their requirements are if any.
  3. This is always a tough one in any sport. First I get the parents involved so that when I do take action it won't come as a surprise. After the parents are involved then I start cutting back playing time. This has been most effective for me. I have tried running, sitting out of practice, etc. but a reduce role and lack of game time sends a clear message to everyone.

    Soccer Ball Size

Doug, A size 4 soccer ball is an appropriate size for this age group. I believe that he really won't progress to a size 5 until he is 10 or 11 years old.
