  1. I suppose that you are correct in that assumption However She is an overly nice person and probably felt that she would hurt someones feelings by doing so. It is strange to see a girl like this plow over a catcher at home plate but then feel like she is wrong by asking about something. I guess we both learned something from it though
  2. Last year I made a rather bad decision, But as a parent not as a coach. My daughter is an excepional softball player she is always one of the 3 best players on her teams. Well last year as a freshman in high school she decided to go out for basketball. Now I would not be helping as a coach at all and I thought that would be good. Now she may be terrific at softball she was one of the worst on the basketball team. If for no other reason than having never played before. Well I was excited to go and watch her naturally. In the first game she did not play at all,Same for the second game. After five games still no play time. Guess What I did? NOTHING. You see I have done so much coaching that I did not want to be the problem parent that I have had to deal with myself. And I figured with 30 games on the plate she will get worked in at some point. WELL the season ended with her playing aproxamatly 15 minuetes all season. And she was the only member of the team that never missed a practice. I also never saw her play because the only time she played was at away games when she was all that was left because of fouling out. I never said a thing but I should have at least talked to the coach. My daughter now hates basketball and refuses to play again even for another coach. So remember when you are just a parent dont be a pain in the ass but be a good parent when you need to be.
  3. I commend you for taking up a very good cause. I started rebuilding a softball program three years ago along with another coach. The rewards have been great we went to state last year the first time ever for our little town. But it has not been without some pitfalls and stumbling. You will meet some opisition and you might get so discouraged that you want to quit. But dont I felt like giving up lots of time but never did. Now I have to keep the program going, THATS the hard part. Now I am going to try and weasel my way into the older boys basketball program that has not won a game in league in 4 years, And only won two games total in that time. The Softball program was no where near that far down so if I get in it wont be easy. Just stay with it you can make a differance if you want to.
  4. Here's a good one if you want to break it down a ways. Have them start close to the basket , About where they would be when they stopped dribbling to go up for the shot, Now without dribbling have them go for the lay up real fast pretty soon they will be alot faster and more accurate. When they master this have them move back just a little. Maybe where they have to dribble once or twice, Then just keep moving them back little by little pretty soon they will be at half court and looking good.
  5. I never coached them that young but from what I see of the older girls one of the main things they dont get in the younger levels is enough batting practice. They need LOTS of swings to develop good muscle memory and hand eye coordnation. You will have your hands full keeping their attention. But that never changes because at some point they discover boys.Keep your head up.Itll be fun.
  6. Well derekd gives some real sound advice. he has to have been there to say what he did. I will also give this advice. Come up with some drills for practice that are team oriented real fun and involve every one. Tug o war is good on days before games it has nothing to do with baseball and takes the pressure off of them. it is good to end the practice with. Also little compititions with partners is good. Say a race around the bases. Take two kids one fast one slow, they grab onto a bat and run oround the bases for time and cant drop the bat. Stuff like this helps with team unity.
  7. 1. Disipline 2.Character 3.Integrity 4.Knowlege 5.Love of what he does/Passion 6.Comitment. These are only 6 there are many more but I will say this when dealing with youth the No 1 duty of a coach is to see to it that every player in his or her program has a POSITIVE EXPERIANCE in that season.
  8. Well your on the right track in getting a skills camp together. The one thing that I would change is going to sound a little extreme but Ill explain. I have been to several camps and clinics and I would recomend that you do an all day camp maybe 8-10 hours the first day with a 1 hour brake. Then tell everyone that you will be there for the next day for those who want to show up. Most all of the camps I have seen are run like this and I personally like it real well. First it takes a long time to get through everything that you will wish to do. Second the time will just fly by if you keep every body busy. And the most important is if you keep them playing basketball that long it will leave a very deep imprint on them and they will be more likley to come out and play when the season rolls around. On the second day you will get what I call the hard liners the ones that are real serious about getting better. Now this is hard work and takes dedication wich you must have some of or you wouldnt do it. Just remember no matter who tells you other wise stick with it and it will pay off.

Well heads in the clouds are a good point and have been taken to heart. This is 1 area I really would like to work on during our camp.If you cant take care of the ball kinda hard to get in your offense. You might be thinking well the other team is just playing good defense.Bottomline.I want to be in the attack mode all game.I want my players to be hungry for whats rightfully theres=WIN.They won 1 game last year and none this year.I know that feeling and Im here to tell ya the atittude is slowly turning around but getting them to believe in eachother and working together will work wonders and only until that happens will they reep the benefits. Seems like something is goofed up with the website and who posted what . But to try and help heres some thoughts. First Ive never met you but I can tell that you are fairliy serious about coaching and becoming better, If I did not think this I would not even continue to reply. Find a team/coach combination some where near you where the coach has been with them for a while and has had better than average success. Doesent have to be basketball just sucessfull. Go and watch there practices just sit and watch with no distractions. Take notes if you feel like it. Absorb all that you can about COACHING not nessasarly fundamentals Mecanics ECT. Go over in your own mind the things about yourself that you can Enhance or change to become better. Next go to a basketball coaching clinic or observe a really good team in action both in games and practice. Do this in the off season. Learn all you can about the games fundamentals and such. Every book dvd video or other form of learning on the subject read it or watch it. Be an absoloute spounge for information. Once you start this if you are like I believe you are you will not be able to stop. You will also start to develop more and more of your own style. Finally about a month before next season start GETTING INTO CHARACTER. I n other words start thinking like a coach. Write down practice plans and an overall plan for the season. Write down the mechanal as well as the mental things you WILL acomplish in the season. I would wish you luck but I dont believe in luck. Winners get there by hard work Period. GO GET EM

  11. I have coached about 10 years now and the draft for the up coming season will be upon us soon. I have always had a pretty good team but decided to ask 40 year vetran advice for the draft. Here are his words of wisdom exatcly as said: "Its simple you draft the best pitcher first If you dont get him draft the one with the best looking mother"
  12. Yes there is one Ibelieve it is made in idaho or eastern oregon I dont remember what it is called but it is completley portable. If you google portable batting cage it will come up . about 750 bucks I think

Well First are they turning the ball over Because of laziness? Are their heads somewear in the clouds? Being able to recognize the cause of problems is one of the hallmarks of good coaches. Another thing that I have always done to bring out the best in my players is to be honest. Here is an example . "Well Judy you are a good passer but you dont think ahead enough and you get a little lazy sometimes so show US the real Judy OK." Dont be loud or rude and dont pick on Judy all night, The next thing is find something that Judy does well and tries real hard at and come unglued at her about how well she does it. :Example: She makes a perfect shot with her signature move to the basket during a scrimage type drill.Your reaction:You yell out" MY GOD JUDY THAT WAS BEAUTIFUL I JUST LOVE IT WHEN YOU EXICUTE THAT MOVE YOU ARE GETTING IT TOGETHER". I use yelling to define good effort and heart to send home the message that they are OK. I never yell at them when they get lazy or goof off. This Helps them concentrate on doing well instead of what they did wrong. It really sends home the good things and they dont mull over mistakes. You have to constantly stay Tough while not being mean. Keep it up you will get it if you stay with it.

Well you are in the same boat that a lot of coaches find them selves in. The first thing that most coaches do is look at there lack of knowlege in their given sport. There is vast amounts of knowlege out there on any sport and it is helpful but it wont make you or any one else a coach. The first thing you must do is get there attention. With no speeches or warning line them up on the base line have them do about three or so suicides. then go to squat thrusts or push ups. then inform them that THEY have the choice of learning the game and giving it there all at practice or doing mindless excerises. DO NOT PUNISH MISTAKES, only poor effort and laziness. Let them know that you are in charge and have a standard to be met both at practice and in games. Let them know that you are also human, The movie night idea is a good one for that. They must see that you have killer instinct and burning desire to win, That you are in charge, And that all of you are a TEAM, And They must believe in you and each other. This is not easy to do but I have done it many times and it is very rewarding. Finally make rules and stick to them no matter what. The beginning of the season is the best time to start this but it still works mid season just not quite as well.
