  1. CoachRob- yep, its true. One rusher from anywhere they want to come from. Think I will be at a slight disadvantage until a game or so till I get adjusted to this type of defensive pressure or more importantly my qb. TeeDub- go ahead and explain the misdirection you are talking about if you could for this type of offense because I am more familiar with misdirection I used being able to run and such. I appreciate it.
  2. ok, my bad. there are no pitches aloud. Field is 65 yards long and there are 2 first down markers on the field. Also, on 4th down you have the option of going for a first down or punting which really isnt punting but the other team getting the ball back at the 5 yd line.
  3. Been doding the 5 on 5 for years and now my sons tackle football program is starting up a 7 on 7 flag league. Kind of a new format for me though and curious as to what type of offense others would run. It is a league of no running the ball, we are allowed screen passes or pitches which I guess we could count as a run, sort of.Passing the is the name of the game. Teaching very good ruote running will be essential. Defense is only allowed to use 1 rusher. I dont think they have to be any certain numbers of yards from the line of scrimmage. Guess we better hope we have some good athletes or play some very disciplined zone defense. Leagues starts in about 3 weeks and they are allowing 2 hours of practice 2 nights a week. Seems like plenty of practice time compared to the 1 hour we were allowed 1 time a week before.
  4. Well, we won 25-20. Started out with the trips formation and I think it kind of threw them off guard at first. Took them a few plays to adjust but by that time we had already scored. And then when we came out in twins next time, we ran some crossing patterns with some success. Then I lined up 2 receivers to the right and 1 wide to the left. I had both the right receivers head for the safety and then at the same time 1 did a in post and the other a out post and the guy on the out was WIDE open and easily scored. We were up 19-0 at half and I think the guys got a little over confident and let their guards down cause in the 2nd half they came roaring back. Luckily we got them again with a double pass, passed it to my guy who had been buring them all day with his speed and they got suckered in thinking he was going to run and he then passed it downfield easily for a score. We then just played prevent def and took it home. Got a new challenge now. I am now going to try a 7 on 7 league my sons tackle football program has started with 12-13 yo. Think I might start a new thread to see what kind of feedback on this one.
  5. Coach Rob- good advise, unfortunate thing is we got rained out this week so we'll have to wait and try this info this upcoming weekend.
  6. Hello all, love the forum and have been checking it out for about 2 years or so now. Just wanted some ideas on how others would attack this type of defense. The team we are playing seems to play a 2-2-1 zone defense. Their best and fastest kid is the deep safety. I plan on using lots of trips and twins to either side and trying to overload the safety by running multiple kids deep and on crossing patterns. I am initially going to run possibly a drag route or having my center run to the spot where someone is suppose to rush from ( 7 yds deep) to get a good feel for what they are actually doing on defense. Any other ideas??
  7. Yeah, I am of the same thing on this. My son is currently 9 and I dont want him to start tackle until he gets a few years older. They're pretty much still developing and would hate for him to tear something at this young of an age. Plus this helps him with some of the basics to learning the game of football without the risk of injury.
  8. Good job, we have a few of thos teams in our division this year. My son moved up to the 9-11 y.o. group and I decided to sit back this spring season to see how they did things in the older group. Pretty much pass, pass and pass some more unless you have a kid that can really run. They didnt do so well, going 3-4 and he wasnt a very happy camper at all. Hard when you go from being 8-1 and going to the playoffs to a losing season. Now its wait until the fall season begins in early September. I'm going to send him to the Mike Alstott camp for kids in June so that should be kind of exciting for him. I havent told him yet, going to surprise him here sometime in the not to distant future. Good luck in your playoffs!
  9. golly, been kinda quiet around here lately.
  10. My son moved up to the next age group, the 9-11, and I decided to sit back this spring league and not coach just to see how they did things in the older league and what a mistake that was. It is so hard to sit there and not say anything or want to add your 2 cents while the practices are going on. It's driving me frickin crazy I tell ya. *L* I thought this would be a pretty much all passing age group as the older ones are but they do still run quite a bit. Kinda surprising to me.
  11. This was in the league letter I just received yesterday in regards to picks and such... 3) There is no blocking, no tackling, and no contact. Once a ball carrier passes the line of scrimmage, it is best to coach your other offensive players to stop where they are. They can not run downfield along side of the ball carrier as to screen defenders from a clear attempt at a flag. Picks and screens are not allowed.
  12. I coach in the I-9 also...Same rules.5 on 5.I have them set picks but they really aren't you know?its just something we do...lol I coached I-9 as well, the 7-8's and they must not be doing a very good job calling things cause in our league they'll call you in a heartbeat if they see that going on.
  13. If the kid can catch have him run a few swing out passes in the left or right flat short of the los. From that play he'll be moving a lot quicker and will be harder to stop. Hey Orange, the rules for I-9 are different. Had it called against me this past season trying to do such. They read as such: • All passes must be forward and received beyond the line of scrimmage. • Shovel passes are allowed but must be received beyond the line of scrimmage. • Hand-offs, laterals, pitches and screen passes ARE allowed only behind the line of scrimmage. A lateral, pitch or screen pass must be behind the QB and not forward. If the ball hits the ground, it is a dead ball. If it is forward, it must pass the LOS.
  14. Anyone have a drill for flag pulling besides lining up the kids between cones and going at it?I'll do 2-1 and such but any other ideas?I read one drill earlier in the thread when I went through the whole thing but I can find it anymore and I did a search on it.Thanks in advance One thing we use to practice was what was called "Survivor" This game will help develop flag pulling and avoiding the flag pull at the same time. You need to mark off an area that is big enough for all players to be able to move around in (25 by 25) with cones. All players will waer flags and need to stay within the area while playing. Two players are "it". The players must avoid getting their flags pulled, while the first two players attempt to pull flags. The coaches then watch for proper technique when flag pulling and when avoiding the flag pulling the players cannot spin or knock away the flag pullers hand. When a player has their flag pulled they then become flag pullers also. The game continues until there is only one player left that has thier flag and they are the winner. So, all players get good work on flag pullling and also at avoiding getting flag pulled. The kids seemed to enjoy it and it got quite competitive at times. Our leagues starts up here agin next weekend. My son moved up to the 9-11 age group and this spring I am more then likely going to sit back and watch how they do things in this age group and the probably coach again the fall league. Seems they do mostly passing at this age group.
  15. Well, we lost 18-0 to a team we should have beaten. We are pretty much a pass oriented team and the day of the game we had 25 mph winds and it really through us off of our game. The basically had 1 good kid that beat us by himself. He was like a gazelle, we'd have him contained and then all of a sudden he'd change direction and go the other way and out run our whole team. Oh well, it was a great learning experience for me. It was pretty neat seeing some of these kids progress from week to week. Unfortunately my son moves up to the next league and most of the kids on our team will stay in the 7-8 age group. Bummer, I would have liked to keep the team together and see what happens again. Like I stated before, I really apppreciate all the great advice that was presented here.
