  1. In our league: -- We can't blitz inside the tackles -- Coaches can be on the field for the first four games, but the last three they cannot -- Cannot have five in the backfield (which is standard most places anyway) -- For the 8-9 year olds, the kids can weigh a max of 125 with pads (but without helmet) Seems to work for us.
  2. I couldn't agree with Coach A's posting more. I know this guy hates the fact that he isn't head coach; though he never applied for it and as such, has to deal with whomever he is assigned. It just so happens to be this time. If he bothers to show tonight, I plan to tell him to deal with it or beat it. If he doesn't, problem solved.
  3. His knowledge in general is an asset; his attitude sure isn't. Funny thing is, he didn't show up for practice last night. If he doesn't show tomorrow, that's it.
  4. That's the thing. My style is delegation and to me it's the best way because it lets me focus on the big picture and lets the assistants do what they were brought in to do which is why this was such a surprise. I'm tempted to send him packing tonight at practice since several people were witnesses but I'm also willing to tell him that if it happens again, he'll be history, just because I believe everyone can have a bad day. True, he needed to have left it at home if that were the case, but I need to set a president so it doesn't happen again.
  5. We won our first game this past weekend in a close battle. Unfortunately my offensive coach somehow got the impression that my suggestion (I'm head coach) for a play at 3rd and goal was second guessing him. Ultimately he came off the field after failing to score and giving the ball up on downs huffing and puffing, loudly and violently telling me that he was going to kick my ass, etc, etc. All I did was suggest a play. I don't know if it would have worked or not but the sad thing was, the kids on the sidelines heard him and some parents heard him, even though they couldn't everything we said on the sidelines. He also later complained about some calls the refs made on the field (not questionable in my opinion) and I even heard one say, "Yeah, and I throw flags because it's fun to do..." This guy knows the game, but I'm noticing the beginnings of a lack of patience in our 8-9 year old team. He has seemed short in practice and I think the kids have noticed. I tried calling him later that day to talk about it but he never returned my call. Any suggestions about how to best handle this? We could certainly survive without him but I'd rather not if we don't have to.
  6. We have some fairly decent size up front, so I wouldn't say we're outmanned as such. We're seing mostly "stacked" defensive lines meaning that we're seeing the likes of 5-3, 6-3-2, 8-3, and so on. At this age, very few teams do more than three or so passing plays so everyone is playing against the run. The big weapon for most seems to be the sweep or reverse, (though our D got burned on that, too, this weekend, but that's a different story) but our QB hasn't even had enough time to get the ball into the hands of a FB, HB or RB without getting creamed. We had 10 sacks this past week! Maybe we need to look into SAB but I'm not all that familiar with it so in order to implement, I'd need to learn it myself.
  7. Mostly we're teaching them to keep low, explode off the snap and push off the numbers. Generallly we run I-formations in the backfield and we push away from the play, either to open a hole or to to contain on the ends.
  8. We've lost our first two games of the season and the primary reason has been the literal collapse of the offensive line. We've spent considerable time trying to teach our 8-9 year old tackle team about jumping off the snap, paying attention to your man and even double teaming. We've spent a little time at the sleds but my view has been that hitting a stationary target is one thing, but stopping a moving defense is quite another thing entirely. Any tips anyone could suggest to improve our O-line would be greatly appreciated.
  9. This is his first year of tackle. Last year he played flag.
  10. I've recently tried him at MLB but he isn't making the plays when we need it (despite my best coaching), and now we have him at LT on defense and he's getting trampled as I suspected. My assistant coaches are spending all their time working the "stars" (which include their own sons, by the way), but the non-stars like my son just aren't finding their niche and now he's starting to feel very frustrated. Any thoughts?
  11. You guys are great! You've made me feel better and as a result I'm confident I'll find a spot for him. I'm still not certain about O-guard but I like the idea of OLB on defense. We have practice tonight and again tomorrow morning and I'll try him there as well as other positions to see how it goes. I'll let you all know what happens!
  12. I'm afraid that if I put him on the line he'll get trampled (he's only 60 lbs). I think your advice about giving him a chance to prove himself in practice is solid however. I know I'm probably harder on him than other coaches might be (typical Dad), but I'll never tell him that he can't do something. I'll let him try to do anything he wants and then he can discover for himself what he's best suited for. I'm just so afraid that he'll see what I see and will give up entirely. Again, I'll never say he can't do something. On the contrary, I'll help him do whatever he wants to try to do. I'd just hate to see him give up because he "can't do anything."
  13. I'm the head coach of an 8-9 year old tackle team with a lot of talent. We've just started the preliminary steps of determining who will likely go where, but I can't seem to find a place for my son. He's short, light, with no hands and no wheels but who loves the game and wants to do well. I've already given the speech to the team that every position is important and has purpose, but for the life of me, I don't know where to put him. I can put him anywhere I want "politically" but I don't work that way. He really wants RB but he just doesn't have the wheels. Anyone have any ideas?
  14. I'm a first year youth (5-7 year old) flag football coach and I'm looking for a good substitution strategy for 7-on-7 to ensure everyone plays, and that everyone plays every position, both defense and offense. Any ideas?
