  1. Does anyone know of out of season b-ball activity (leagues, instructions, camps, etc) that is available in the greater Cincinnati, Ohio area for a 5th grade girl player? Area of interest includes: mid or southern Ohio, mid or northern Kentucky or the east side of Indiana. I am attempting to find any kind of after season b-ball activity for my daughter. Tried the local (Clermont county, Ohio) YMCA to no avail. thanks! rc
  2. Thanks to each one of you folks that responded to my entry regarding my 10 year old daughters lack of play time (I.E. 15 minutes on the bench of a 24 minute game). It is good to see such an example of conscientious thought. Of course I would like to see my daughter play more, but my goal is to understand the dynamics of coaching in regards to the kids physical and mental development. There is one other aspect of this issue that I see and do not understand. Explanation: This team has had a slow start, losing more games than they win, currently. Not one kid stands heads above the rest, however one girl is more agressive and an all around better player, by a degree -- not heads above. One girl monopolizes rebounds, while another is the steal queen and shoots a couple baskets a game. Two out of the 7 girl team are obviously less agressive defensively that my kid, and rarely contribute offensively. Again, we are talking degrees of difference, not bunches. What I don't understand is that one particular kid is virtually never taken out. She is unquestionably a little better athlete and b-ball player than the other kids, but passes the ball recklessly & repeatedly to the other team about 5-10 times a game. Now, on the other hand, she does score a couple-three baskets a game! I agree with those that feel an obligation to the better players-to have more play time. But I believe each kid AT THIS LEVEL deserves enough play time to have the opportunity to excel. I don't understand why one kid, even though a little better but constantly throws the ball away, is virtually never taken out; when another kid sits and watches for 15 minutes from the bench. Shouldn't that kid have the opportunity to exel, at this age? Thanks in advance, for your time and kindness. This will be the last of this subject matter. Ron Campbell

Hi. This is my first visit to your forum. My interest is I have a 10 year old daughter who is very interested in basketball. Last year, she was able to start this interest on a 4th grade league team. She was not able to play anything prior to that due to a continuing illness over a 3 year period, that may or may not return at any time. Now, thank god, she has been well for a couple years, but she remains a little behind the better players on her 5th grade team, but she is catching up rapidly, and is currently near there. I simply want my daughter to have a reasonable opportunity to excel at her chosen sport at her level. The problem I'm running into is the coach is an exceptional motivator. There is a 1-quarter minimum play time rule for our league, but my daughter ends up sitting on the bench for 15 minutes at a time during some games. Any kid left out of the game for 15 minutes of the 24 minute game is going to grow cold; mentally & physically, to the game -- possibly long term. I can understand the kids who are better than others should have the opportunity to play a lot in a game at higher levels, but I don't believe that a 5th/6th grade age girl should be refused the opportunity for reasonable game-time play experience. It seems that practice, although critical for fundamentals, does not provide the competitive challenge of real game-time. If a 10 yr old kid does not get a reasonable amount of game time, does that not remove their opportunity to excel? How do you guys & gals conscientiously handle the quandry of allowing better kids their play time, while at the same time allowing the kids who are not quite so good the opportunity to excel?? I have little knowledge of basketball and have never coached, but this is important for my kid's physical & mental development -- I know sports teach us huge lessons in life, and it pains me greatly to see her come out of this sickness and work hard, and then sit for 15 minutes on the bench to feel worthless. Please help! ron campbell
