  1. I have had great success with 8th graders with the 1-2-2. So much in fact that other teams that we have played before are now going to it. Key for success is to have a quick point man who is also at least medium size and has a lasting energy. If you have two players like this, sub them in and out. I have my point man drive the ball handler to the foul line or higher extended. The elbow player then releases to set up a trap. This is why bigger kids up top help. Hands are straight up to block sight lines. During trap, other elbow player fills the middle at the free throw line. Weak side post player goes to middle just in front of the basket. Strong side post player takes two steps out or guards base line player. This usually forces a cross court pass in which the middle players have a chance at intercepting. If pass is completed. It is always high which lets you rotate over. This defense also keeps the ball and offence high and away from the basket. Creates a lot of fast breaks.
