To Meddle Or Not To Meddle
bobsalas replied to bobsalas's topic in General Youth Coaching Information
The site is http://www.goodfor3.com/. It is great. The problem with my son is that he has to remain engaged to the action to stay focused. For example, when he played baseball if he was on the bench he would squirm and wrestle with whoever was sitting next to him (very typical ADD behavior). But when he was on base, he was very focused on what he had to do and how. He stole bases regularly (every kid does at that level), but he also stole home several times. I talked to one of the assistant football coaches about him and told him the best thing he could do is to yell coaching instructions and encouragement to him. Most kids at this level don't need it, but it helps him remain focused and engaged. Coach was very understanding. Go NAMS Tigers. -
To Meddle Or Not To Meddle

Thanks. We did go out this weekend and kicked. The coach happened to be mowing the field so that may have impressed him. We have also downloaded info on how to kick. And he practices everynight kicking over the tree in the front yard. We have decided to let it go and just work on his kicking for now. The other issue is that he has a learning disability (ADD/HD) that makes it hard for him to focus unless he is engaged and prodded. For teachers and coaches it looks like he is not paying attention and loafing, and can be very frustrating for them. He is not disruptive, it is just his mind seems to wander when he is on the sidelines. When he is in the game he is focused. But coaches seem to form their opinions (and rightly so) on the athlete's behavior in practice and on the sidelines. We'll just let him fight this one out. Get him some coaching this summer and see what happens next year. Thanks. Go NAMS Tigers!!! -
My son plays on his 6th grade tackle football team. This is first year and he is doing OK. He played soccer for 5 years and thought he would give football a try. When he first started he told me he wanted to place kick. He has a pretty strong leg for his size 5'0" 100#. The coach announced that they would have open tryouts for the place kicker and the top two would be the place kickers. My son tried out and won the backup spot when he hit 3 of 5 extra points to the other guy's 4 of 5 trys. He was very happy and proud to be the back up kicker. The week of the first game the #1 kicker hurt his leg so my son thought that made him the #1 guy. But at practice on Friday (the kids play games on Saturday) the coach brought his son out as the new kicker and my son was made the #2 kicker again. My son said Nick, the coach's son, had tried out at open try outs and failed to kick any PATs. And at practice that night he got all the kicks and my son got none. Later that night I called the coach and asked for an explanation. He said that the other coaches knew his son was a good kicker so they had been working with him after practice and with their help he had improved to the point where he could now be the #1 kicker. This extra coaching was not available to my son, in fact he got no kicks at practice, either. In truth, Nick is probably just slightly better than my son, but head to head they are probably just as good. That is if they kicked 10 PAT trys, my son and Nick would probably make 6 or 7 of the trys. With the #1 guy back, my son is now #3. Before this week's game, my son got 3 kicks and Nick got 12. Nick did make his PAT in the game and my son missed his. I have told my son if he wants to kick he will have to win the job back, and to be assertive in practice. If Nick kicks 10 times and coach only gives him 3 kicks, he has to demand he gets the extra 7 kicks. There is no doubt in my mind that Nick got special treatment that was not available to the rest of the players. My wife says to just keep quiet and finsih out the season. I think my kid's having a good time, but I know this kicking thing upsets him. What do you think?
