I am going into my first year coaching youth flag football, i believe the ages are 5-6. I need some ideas of what to teach these young guys (and gals). I have ideas of what i would like to do.
the league we are in the level is just instructional , coachs on the field. I want to make sure i keep this fun and the practices fun. I also want every kid to learn as much as possible. as well as play as much as i can.
I am taking over after a coach who had winning seasons back to back. I am not concerned with winning just having fun, remeber they are still kids.
So if anyone can give me some advice it would be greatly appreciated.

One of the first things you need is your league rule book. Is it addemdum or is it the whole thing? Bottom line is make sure you know what the rules are. Don't spend a whole lot of time lecturing to the kids what the rules are. Teach them as you go. Make sure they know the basic guidelines and let them start playing!
Playing is what it is all about. They just want to have fun. Is it fun to win? Absolutely! Will they even know it if they lose? Probably not. At this age their little minds are swimming with information hitting them from a million directions. See for yourself. After a game take them to eat at McD's (example only) and while you're eating lunch ask them if they know what the score of the game was. Chances are most of them won't. They don't care. They are happy to just play the game. It is really fun at this level. I envy you a little.
Keep your practices short. An hour is plenty two or three times a week. Spend no more than 10-15 minutes on a particualr exercise or drill. Make the drills or exercises games of some sort. They will be learning and not even know it. Have your practice laid out "before" you arrive and be incontrol. Have enough activities prepared that if one isn't going well you can stop it and go to the next without not having enough to fill the whole practice. If you don't get to everything make a note and get it next time. Above all don't stress about it because the kids will sense it and duplicate your mood so be happy! Again, the internet is agreat source for particualr practice guides and specific drills.
I hope this helps!!!!! Have fun!!!!!!!!!!

One thing our [rogram found helpfull was to check with the tackle coaches and see what kind of offense and defense they run. If you can run the same offense (probably watered down some) it will help the kids transition to takle easier. The other coaches will probably give you some ideas of the things they would like the kids to already know before they move up as well. Hope this helps, Bill
