2013 will mark my 9th year of coaching. Over the past 9 years, I've coached soccer, basketball, and flag football with a great group of kids and parents. The past couple of years, I focused solely on competitive basketball and coached close to 200+ games in those two years with various leagues and tournaments (same kids).
It all started while "helping" with my son's preschool soccer team. The next year, my wife signed up to be the coach of our son's kindergarten team since they didn't have one. It really wasn't her deal, so I slowly took the reigns. The rest as they say, "is history".
I played several sports growing up through high school including football, basketball, baseball, and tennis. Tennis and basketball ended up being my main sports in the later high school years and college.
Coaching my son and being a dad at the same time has been a challenge. In the rec years, it was easier to keep things fun and not get so serious. Stepping up into the competitive realms brought with it different challenges. I've had to apologize a few times to both my wife and son for things I shouldn't have said in the heat of the moment.
I picked up an assistant coach early on who's been with me for most of the 9 years. Through it all, we've tried to get good playing time for everyone, teach some life lessons, and make sure the kids had some fun along the way. Hopefully we helped create a few good memories for them to share with their kids someday.
