Offensive Plays For 1St Graders Spreading The Ball Around

Recommended Posts

I have first/second graders. I am looking for the simplest way to use the same formation and give the ball to different kids in their same or original position.

I want to only use 4 plays for the first couple weeks. I want to be able to change who gets the ball without changing their position. To draw it up I would need 6 (6 kids on the field) different diagrams of the same play so they would know what to do. I know without the visual they will get confused and go the wrong way. I want to rotate kids through all the positon and be able to decide who will get the ball without changing formation or position. If i change position it will be a give away, same formation different rb he will get the ball, rb always gets the ball in this play.

thanks

Hi Harry,

I'm a proponent of keeping the players in the same position. I can give you four plays that will get the ball to four different positions--same formation. End-around. You noted six players? You can easily give the ball on this play to your guards and wide-outs (three plays). Then add a play where you give it to the RB.

Of course, I'd recommend you add more to your play book than these four plays, but it's very easy for the kids to learn. I've attached an example of what I'm talking about. Just use the same play to bring the LR, and LG on the end-around, and then another where you give to the RB (instead of fake). I hope this helps.

Harry, please update us on how well your plan goes. I coach a team of 5/6 year olds and I had a simular plan and would still like to execute it as the season continues. This is my 1st season coaching and the first 5/6 year old game I saw occured about 30 minutes prior to our kickoff. So I'm pretty green.

We only had 2 1 hour practices prior to the 1st game and it was too much for me to introduce anything other than a simple run play and a center pass play. We have a bye week this Saturday so I'm going to hopefully run 3 practices prior to the next game. I would like to add an end-around and a 2nd pass play to the WR. All run out of the same formation giving us the option of getting any player the ball with out rotating players.

A couple of thoughts.

1.) Fundamentals are key. Center/QB exchange, QB/RB exchange. In the rush to introduce the offenese we failed to stress these aspects enough. Our kids struggled with getting the ball back to the RB prior the blitzer meeting them in the backfield (starts from 7 yards out). Also not only Football fundamentals but simple things like no talking in the huddle and keep your mouthpiece in your mouth while your on the field. I had one player attempting to insert thier mouthpiece in thier mouth while taking the hand-off. Makes it difficult to execute :)

2.) Work on Team Offense at the beginning of practice. 5/6/7 year-olds attention spans seem to give way by the 35-45 minute mark. You may have better luck with 7 year-olds, I know my 6 year-olds are more capable of taking direction then the 5 year-olds.
