Nfl Flag 5 On 5 Winter Season Begins

Recommended Posts

We started our Winter season with the 5 on 5 Flag league here in Central Texas.

Had fun but the girls didn't seem to have it together. In practice Saturday they seemed to peak. Today a few key players were flat.

Final was 24 vs 14 and we lost. Sad part they picked us twice and returned them for 12 points. This same coach beat me twice last season by shutting me out. He covers the run and forces us to pass which is still our weakest part.

Not sure what to do there but will keep plugging at it. Game 2 next week.

Are you in a co-ed league, or is it all girls? We have a few girls in our league (mainly coach's daughters) but some are pretty good. I have an eight-year old girl whom I can't get into sports. I know she would never play football (she hates going to her brother's games), and even finding rec all-girl soccer/basketball leagues around here is tough.

They have both co-ed and all girls leagues here. (Austin Texas area)

My team is all Girls. 8 -11 yrs old. Five girls returned from my Fall team. We were 1-5 last season. After our first game we are 0-1. I have borrowed ideas from several playbooks I have seen on here and added some of my own.

Two girls are super fast runners but they just can't seem to get past the defense. Our short pass game gets us some yards but anything longer than 10 yards just doesn't happen very often. In practice they run the routes and catch the balls. In the game they forget the routes ect and just run in circles waving their arms.

I have to work this week on getting at least one of them to run the deep route.

I have faith it will get better. My 10 yr old is on my team, so she is the coaches daughter too.. Plays center / TE and second best receiver on the team, just not very fast.

Hey Dellobo,

We play in the same league as you in the 5th/6th grade division and started our season this past weekend as well. We won 35-7, and all kids got at least 2 ball touches. Most had 3 or more and 7 of my 8 kids on the team scored either a TD or extra point.

I have a couple of new kids on our team this winter (friends of players on our team), and one is a girl who is playing QB for me this winter. She is doing great and really picking up the offense fast.

As I tell my team during practices and re-emphasized before the first game, it is the little details that make the difference. Selling the fakes hard on run fakes, etc.

We play at 4PM Sunday if you want to take a look. I'd be glad to help you out anyway I can.

Patrick

So you play in the Cedar park Neighborhood Sports NFL Flag League?

If that is so then I was referring to "Hector S" as the coach we played last Sunday. We play at 2pm at Vista Ridge on field 4.

thanks. I can send you my playbook if you would like to see what i am using.

Yup.

Never played against Hector but I know he took a team to the national championships a couple years ago so I am sure he is a good coach.

Sure that sounds good.

I forgot to say we're on field 3 at Vista Ridge at 4PM.

Great, yeah his girls are disiplined and don't take fakes they just stay in their zones. Last season shut us out twice. Once regular season 19-0, and in the playoffs 6-0 with a minute left in the game.

We practice Saturdays at 11am at Cluck Creek and you are welcome to stop by and give me pointers.

Thanks again.

Well we had game 2 today and it was one of the days where it all just clicked. We won 35-0. The mercy rule kicked in and the other coach wanted to play out the clock. So at that point we had won the game. We picked them and returned it for a TD but it didn't count. There was about 5 minutes left on the clock and they finally got a TD on a pass and catch. It didn't count either.

It was 20-0 at the half and then 15 more points on the first two drives in the second half.

Everything worked like it should. They are a young team and very agressive and every fake sucked them in. Four TD's on long sweeps and one on a pass into the end zone.

With the off and on rain I couldn't get the wife to stay to watch "Texas D coach" game at 4pm.

We will see against the Cowboys next week.

We played a good team today and ended up losing 15-7. We had the game tied 7-7 up until 3 minutes left in the game, and then the other team scored on a long run where we missed som flags. They scored the 2 pt conversion to beat us by 8.

I did watch a little of your game dellobo. The girls looked very good today. Those sweeps were money every time it seemed.

Sorry the Chargers didn't pull it out.

Yeah until they stopped the game we scored on every posession except one that we turned the ball over on a interception. They had a first on about our 10 yard line and we stopped them from scoring.

At that point it was 13-0 and we came back and got one more before the half.

My daughter the center / TE on a third and 20 caught a little out pass and ran down to their 10 before they caught up with her. A few plays later she caught a TD pass.

Try to catch one of your games next week.

Dellobo,

I saw your girls running down the field on some long runs again yesterday. Looks like you definitely have things figured out now.

Good luck against Hector's team next week.

Dellobo,

Good luck against Hector's team next week.

We played the Cowboys and won 28-0. After we got 28 they called the game and they got one chance to move the ball and we stopped them. Then they gave them 3 more chances at scrimmage mode.

I wish Hectors team was not coached so well... Next week it will be a shot at first and maybe the 4th time is the one I will get past him.. He is 3-0.

Our schedule

How did your game go?

How did your game go?

We won 32-0.

Like you we will be playing the only undefeated team in our league. I watched them play and they have some older kids who are really disciplined and some smaller kids who are very fast and shifty.

It should be exciting!!

Good Luck (we'll both need it I think).

Well Game 4 didn't go so well.

Cardinals were up 6-0 at the half. We came out and tied the game 6-6 with about 10 minutes left in the game. Then a few broken tackles (Missed flags) and they went the distance for a score. 12-6

We came out and went 3 and out. They came back and ran the distance again 18-6. We had one more long pass that was caught for one step and dropped.

Game ended.

This team beat us twice and soon as they had their initial score my girls gave up. At half time a couple of them were crying and ready to quit and it was only 6-0.

The two easy wins made them expect to win easily.

Well we must regroup and get ready for the next game...

Now 2-2.

...Now 2-2.

Well pretty much the same scenario for us this weekend, except our game wasn't even close. We played a super stacked team that creamed us 33-0. They scored on the first play of the game and kept scoring just about every time they touched the ball. Sometimes we held them for a play or 2 before the broke one for a TD.

These guys are all big, athletic, and FAST!!! We play in a 5th/6th grade league, and all my kids but 1 are still 5th graders with average athleticism. This whole team was 6th graders. They only 6 kids on their team, and at least 4 out of their 6 were awesome athletes, so they pretty much had all stud players on the filed the whole game.

We were simply outmatched, and the other coach just has an amazingly good team. There is no one in our league who will come close to them this season.

I saw the same thing in my kids eyes after they scored on the first play. They had their heads down and knew they were going to get smoked.

I tried to keep things positive, but it didn't help much. I have already begun putting together a short talk I am going to give them at our next practice about giving their best effort no matter what.

Luckily we won't play this team a second time this season, except maybe in the playoffs...(Uh-oh!).

Yeah I understand and we won't play Hector again until the playoffs if we get past the first round. It would take a mircle for him to lose either of the remaining games.

I won't take anything for granted but we should get by these two team a second time. I do have one parent of my smallest girl very upset that she only gets to touch the ball about once a game and not at all in this last one.

She is only 8 and very small for her age. We are working hard with her in practice but she seems to get distracted in the game. Two games ago we were up 22-0 so I had her run on one play and a few plays later we tried to throw to her. She ran the wrong route then didn't look back at all to the QB. Our QB scrambled for her life and was locked on the little girl. So of course two defenders covered her. Finally tried to force the ball in and got picked. Luckly she was downed right there. The dad wasn't happy because I didn't try to throw to her again....

They have made it known they will move her to a differnt league in the Spring. I am a parent and understand we all want our child to win the game for us, but we have to work with what we have and I try not to just play the best ones we do rotate.

I had a parent mad last season because she felt we wasn't competitive enough because I rotated too many kids on offense.

Did you say hi out side the stadium Sunday?

See you at the game 5 weekend.

Yah that is the tough thing about coaching a team of strangers. Sometimes you will come across parents who think their kid should be the star, or you're not playing them enough, etc. It is hard to make everyone happy all the time.

Like John, Rob, Orange and others on this board, I try to keep a core group of kids that either live in our neighborhood, or are friends of kids on the team.

Just try to spread the ball around the rest of the season and if they want to part ways after that then so be it. I had the exact situation last winter with a kid who would show up late to every practice or not show up at all, and then also showed up 10-15 minutes late for every game. I asked the parents what was going on and they said he was unmotivated to go to practice and games because he felt he never got the ball. I explained that we had made at least 3-4 attempts every game to get him the ball and that sometimes stuff happens that prevents it from happening that are beyond my control as a coach (i.e. he dropped a pass, or the pass was incomplete, etc.).

I watched the video and I'll make a few comments if you don't mind.

I saw too many long passes that were incomplete. It did look like the defense was cheating up and there was room over the top but I don't know if your players have the skills to make the throw and the catch. I don't think I'd do that often. Certainly you have to try, but I'd try it far less than you did.

The other team did not send a rusher which might have caused me to pace the plays differently. I saw your team executing quick strike plays which is normally good with a rush coming but in this situation you could have let your QB have more time to pick targets. Maybe push a couple of receivers long and then delay one girl dragging over the middle. A short little pop pass hitting the receiver on the run.

I liked your multi-direction run plays. What I saw was the defenders on the outside jumping in very quickly If you ran a fake handoff and simply slid the outside receiver towards the sideline, she would have been wide open. Still, its a long pass but since it would be so wide, I'd take that shot. Plus it might force the corners to stay home a little more and give you more room to run. They were really jumping the run quickly.

Also, since the defenders were so keyed in to the run and not rushing you could have had some slower developing runs and run fakes. So, on that end around instead of snapping the ball just as the end gets next to the QB, snap it when the end is 7-10 yards away. As the play slowly develops it gives your receivers more time to get downfield and the defenders have to make a choice to come in for run support or stay back for the pass. It would give you separation somewhere.

Orange,

Thanks for the feedback. I welcome all of you to say what can help us. I have 3 more games this season. I don't know if you saw our Game 2 and Game 3 video links before that one. (Earlier posts)

We normally don't throw very much except the little toss to our TE / Center (That is the catch for the TD). We run a lot and with our out side speed normally works. My best receiver is my best passer to. I wish she could throw to herself.

We played this team in week one and they played tight on the line and covered the run on every play. We expected them to do it this week so we practiced a lot of RB / pass option plays. As you could see they didn't work well. Just a lot of long incomplete passes.

The next two weeks the team rush on every play but we beat both of them earlier and have to see how they have adjusted to our run.

Any defensive feedback?

Thanks again.

Well the winter season saga continues. Our star player was out sick today but the others pulled together. Our third string runner stepped up and ran for three TD's. They keyed hard on the other runners.

Very high winds so neither team passed much. Our other QB completed a key pass for a first down.

Final Chiefs 20 vs Dolphins 0.

Last regular season game next week... then playoffs...

Well game 6 our final regular season game was today... We lost playing very sloppy on offense and defense.

We beat this team in week three 28-0 due to the mercy rule. Today they were ready for revenge. They played well enough to score twice and a 2 pt conversion.

Final: Cowboys 14 vs Chiefs 6

We ended the season 3-3.

We have playoffs next Sunday and play the Cowboys again.
