6 Man Defense Help

Recommended Posts

I'm coaching a 6 man league ad have bunch of 3-4th graders. we're playing a 2-4 defense (2 at line of scrimmage and 4 five yards back_. our pass defense is great but we stink at stopping the run. I was wondering if anyone had any good ideas for teaching the kids to swarm or trap the runners as they're coming through. we have done one on one flag pulling but that hasn't helped much. I need to come up with trapping drills. any input in this area would be greatly appreciated.

Thoughts off the top of my head, maybe run a 2-1-3 defense and use one of your best flag pullers at the 1 spot. Almost like a roaming middle linebacker with their primary purpose being stopping the run. Maybe you've done this already, but we constantly emphasize watching the belt buckle area of the runner, not the head or legs. We tell our outside guys to force the runner inside to the middle. We also emphasize the importance of slowing a person down.

Can you provide more details of what is happening on the runs? Are they missing flags or not even in position to pull the flag?

As Rob stated, focus on keeping the runner inside. Not sure of your league and first down marks, but if we faced a 2-4, I doubt I would throw once the entire game. Instead of I would just "run where they ain't" and try to pick up 5-10 yards at a clip. My personal philosophy is to stop the run first, then make teams beat us with the pass. We run a 3-2-1. If you can provide specifics, I'm sure someone on here can help, else you can find various topics regarding 6v6 defense. Thanks

Our kids got better at flag pulling by spending about 5 minutes at one practice, and a few minutes pre-game running this simple drill. It focuses on them getting in front of the runner instead of doing the bull-fighter-ole' move.

Getting in front of the runner also slows them down so others can help pull flags, good video. Man, if I had a nickel for every time I had to say, "No bullfighter pulls!".
