  1. So we won our game yesterday 20-18.The difference was extra poitns. We got 2 of them. The other team didnt get any.We did a great job on defense. They had 1 stud (1 of my former players lol) and we did a good job of stopping him.We played well.I told the kids go play hard & go have fun.The kid that was crying last week had a fire lit in his eyes.He looked wonderful and played his heart out.I couldnt believe how amazing this kid played.Overall finally things went our way and we played good!

  2. We have an INCREDIBLE group of officials in our league. One of them I really like--he's ref'd 99% of our games the past two seasons. He's older, and very animated. I've seen him call coaches out for things like that--even if it's within the rules. As an example, last season I watched a game where a team was up two scores in the final few seconds and elected to go for it on fourth down. The official said (loudly), "Coach, you aren't really going to go for it are you? You've already got the game in hand. Show some sportsmanship." I loved it! Being an official yourself, do you ever say anything like that (or at least are tempted to)?

    Thanks

I prefer not to talk to other coaches while I'm coaching unless they are a friend or a coach i've coached against many times and actually know.I didnt know this coach at all nor his assistant.I just preferred not to shake there hands nor talk to them.

I officiate all ages from 5-6 year old flag to high school tackle to adult flag.I dont say anything to coaches unless they ask me to clarify a penalty or why I was talking to a specific player.Other than that, I let coaches coach there own team.If they want to run up score then thats there deal. They have to deal with the consequences that will come with it.My job is to enforce the rules of the game.Sportsmanship is part of a game but no where in the "official rulebook" so I talk about it during the coin toss and to both coaches before the game but in the end its up to the players and the coaches to do the right thing.

When I coach, I'm a coach and not an official (I just happen to know all the rules lol) and when I officiate I'm an official and not a coach.I dont try to tell players/coaches what to do unless its against the rules of the game.

  3. John,I think its just nonclassy.I didnt shake the Coaches hand after the game.I just said nice class and walked away.My emotions did get the best of me there but I think it was just a little rediculous especially when we waited for them to get set on defense a few times during the game.Thats what made me mad the most.

Our leage is 3 downs for a first then 3 downs to score.Keeps the game going and it means you better get some yardage on 1st down lol...

  4. Yesterday was one of the toughest loss's i've ever had.We lost 25-12.The score was 18-12 and we had 2nd and goal from the 15 with about 2 mins left to go in the game.Well we botched that play.So its 3rd and goal from the 15.WR runs the wrong route, ball gets tipped. My RB dives to catch it & misses it.So we go to defense and we aren't even ready the coach runs a play and score. The coach had no class at all.

The tough part about losing this game is we played our hearts out.I had a kid crying during the end of game speech.Every kid was looking at me just so disappointed because we played our butts off and really should of won but we just made too many mistakes.I couldn't be more proud of how we played. We gave it our all but just came up short. The thing thats hits me hard is the look on there faces and the kid that was crying. It was tough to swallow that and still is.

  5. Rob...I know its a big deal but we have played 4 games.2 games we showed up and played great (of course we won).the other 2 we showed up and we were asleep the first half.2nd half we played lights out but we were to far behind to catch up.

We have a walk through before the game starting at about 715.the kids stretch and warm up.we do some light drills.nothing too much.

  6. We lost a tough game 19-7.

For some reason my kids just dont come ready to play in the first half. All of our games are at 8am.I dont use the time as an excuse. We play an a 11-13 year old league but we are just young.

My problem is we dont play the first half and the 2nd half we come out & look amazing but we are playing catch up from behind and we dont have the fire power to do that.I'm not really sure how to fix it.I've never really ran into this. However we are young and playing well.I'm proud of them.I just wish we could play a better 1st half of a game.

  7. Umm I've been coaching in the same league for 3 years and I wouldn't consider myself running it.I deal with all that stuff to.But it comes down to the people who run the league & what they want to do.12 kids is perfect for 6 on 6.I have 12 kids and we play 5 on 5.Its just a matter of how you sub your kids in.All coaches run into it.Its a matter of how you deal with it.Best of luck to you though.Good luck with season & I hope you guys do well.Keep us updated obviously and see how you like the 6 on 6.

  8. John,

Personally I dont see a problem with it at all.Especially since the league runs it & not the coaches.Obviously its an inconvenience but it comes down to the league and them doing what they want to do.Again they own it.I think 6 on 6 is better than 8 on 8 because its a whole different type of football & it takes way different coaching.

  9. We got straight up whooped this weekend lol...27-0.I guess it doesnt help when both of my QB's are sick.So I had to throw my best athlete in there. He did a pretty good job and I think he might be a QB now.But in all honesty as bad as the score seems the game didnt go that way. Both teams fought very hard but we just couldn't get close enough to score. All 4 of there touchdowns were hard to get.We played good.Just needed to have a QB lol.

  10. Yea at that age I would get 2 kids to play center & 2 to play QB.I move all my kids around from RB & WR but even at 11-13 year olds I pick 3 centers & 2 QB's & thats it.I dont have the time to teach every kid on the team how to snap the ball and every kid how to be a QB.Just doesnt work that way. However every kid can learn how to catch (we do catching drills) and how to take hand offs.I'm up front with the parents about this.As a team with games/practice we just dont have that much time for every kid to learn every position.

As far as routes go I would make a play sheet and give each position a number.Point out what number to each kid his position is.That way they can see there route also.

  11. I agree with Orange.Should be kept for older kids.Younger kids have no need.I think it promotes a healthy competition.I agree 2 touches per half is rediculous hard.Playing 2 20 Minute half's you might get 3 drives, rarely 4.So its just not possible. This season I have been by myself coaching so I'm not tracking playing time/touches because I just dont have enough help to do that. However I'm pretty aware of who has gotten the ball and how many times.I keep that stuff in my head.I kept my best players out after we were up 20-6 with about 10 mins left in the game.Got my least amount of talented kids in and they played up to par.

  12. Played our first game today. We won 26-6.Everyone got at least 2 touches. We played hard but need some work.We had 5 interceptions on defense. Our front zone dropped back to far though.Overall a good game.Im proud of how we did.We just need a little tweaking and we can get to where we need to be.
