Orange 26 Report post Posted September 1, 2009 I neeed help with a zone defense i run a 1-1-3 a saftey a rusher a linebacker and and 2 corners my line backer and corners line up front they do a great job on stopping the run but in scrimmages we have struggled with pass any idea's on how to stop the passI'm curious where exactly you are getting beat on the pass. My guess is that you have space behind your corners that is vulnerable. You could start your "corners" back around 7 yards off the ball. That would place them more in the passing lanes and its always easier for a defender to move forward than backwards. The other concept you want to press home is that your middle and side defenders need to take drops once they see there is not going to be a run. I always have my middle guy dropping about 5 yards. I'd have the "corners" dropping even further, 7-10+ depending on how far the receivers are going and how far the qb can throw. The reason I'm putting "corners" in parenthesis is because I play them more like safeties and in fact I call them safeties. My version of the 1-1-3 starts with them back around 7 yards and blasting forward for the runs. As with any defense there is a weakness, but I'm more willing to give up the short flat pass then something over their heads. Here's another thing to consider. How long is the qb getting to pass? Does your rusher speed rush and blow by the qb when he does a little sidestep? We used to do that all the time. This season we're teaching them to start fast, pull up in front and then contain the qb. I'd rather get pressure on him and keep pressure on him then let him get an uncontested throw. If the qb has time and no pressure then it's going to be a lot easier to find a receiver.

Orange 26 Report post Posted September 1, 2009 Just a run a 2-1-2 and your problem is solved Yea, each defense has a weakness. The 1-1-3 that you're running is very strong against the run. It's much more effective against the pass when you run the 1-1-3 the way I described with 3 safeties back around 7 yards. But that defense is susceptible to passes to the outside. The 2-1-2 is strong against outside runs, outside and deep passes, but can get beat over the middle. Man defense is strong all around except that you are vulnerable to matchups and isolation plays. Pick you poison, or do was we do and mix up the defenses to keep the offense guessing.
jqmoney 3 Report post Posted September 1, 2009 Maybe ill do that what i had my corners did was drop back if the pass contiune to develope and had my line backer cover the center that only works sometimes but not all the time i have the Best QB in the league so it's hard for my rushers to get a hold of him and he can throw 50 yards down the field

I have my linebacker take a 5 yard drop and shadow the QB. He needs to have his head on a swivel looking for receivers coming across the middle but he should be following the Qb from sideline to sideline. I don't think it's necessary to have that guy covering the center man to man. I'd prefer for the linebacker to have zone coverage in the area in front of the qb.As I'm reading my reply I'm wondering if you meant your linebacker covers the center (as in the specific player) or the center of the field. My reply was based on the former.
Texas_D_Coach 14 Report post Posted September 1, 2009 JG,One thing our boys love to do to really throttle a passing offense is line everyone up on the 7 yard line and send 2 rushers after the QB. Have your other 3 cover deep. The kids LOVE it when we run this!!It's a fun thing to mix in to whatever your standard defense is and it's easy to teach it to the kids quickly.Other than that the deep 1-1-3 that Orange runs I think would be your best bet.Another thing I like to do alot is run a 2-3 zone, and have my rusher either rush all the way in to the QB, or sometimes just fake the rush halfway in for a 2-1-2 look. This is my defense of choice...
